If the building is 27,000 square feet, and Trader Joe's and Seabra both want about half of that, why not subdivide it and lease to those two?

Ron - why would two competing grocery stores want to split the same retail space, a space they would have to pay ten's of thousands of dollars (if not more) to rehab before they even sold a piece of fruit?

I think people need to be realistic about the fact that we're not getting another grocery store in the space. It's been 2 years and no takers, probably has to do with the fact you live within shouting distance of Market Basket and Stop & Shop (Not to mention the mega Market Basket just over in Everett). So the primary traffic you'd be counting on would be people who don't drive - elderly & low income - which is hardly a compelling demographic for would-be businesses that are being asked to invest a lot just to get the property back on it's feet.

Meanwhile, people who don't live everyday with the hole that is the property get to wax philosophical about all the wonderful business that "aren't being allowed to come in". Take a look around, with the exception of Winter Hill Cleaners we have the classic 'depressed area' mix of empty stores, nail salons, liquor stores and pizza places. The longer this large parcel sits vacant, the worse it is for the entire area. It's going to take 10 years for the community to 'come up' anyway. In the meantime, we have someone willing to invest and fix the eyesore! Or do people think our side of Somerville is going to instantly turn into Cambridge when Ikea opens?

I think it is crazy that the town would rather have the building sit empty, and become a breeding ground for crime, rather than allow Ocean State Job Lot a chance to make nice changes, and bring jobs to the community.
