Call for help

Let’s take a good look at our community. On one hand Somerville is more affluent and prospering more than ever. The nick name Slumerville is fading. The days of Howie Winter and the gang are gone. Davis sq is one of the top 15 most “hip” places to live in the county. People want to move to our community for its proximity to Boston, and diverse culture. Coming are hotels, IKEA, luxury condos, a new Union sq, and Somerville ave, Somerville almost made top 10 All American cities. I’m proud of the progress out community had made in such a short time, and the facts that we live in a safer Somerville now, or do we?

Cars being set in flames, Gang stabbing in parks, Drive by shootings, 16 year olds being shot, 15 year olds with sawed off Rifles, Multiple shootings, Robberies on the bike path, Prostitutes busted in local hotels, Cocaine, crack, and Heroin found in all neighborhoods, Machete attacks, Purse snatching of old women, Robbery’s of kids going home from school . All of these incidences have been in the past 6 months in our fair city. I name more, or go back further, but you get the point. The divided between rich and poor is higher than it has ever been in Somerville, and with the economy the way it is I pray things get better. What this makes me think of is how is our community is doing better when crimes seems to be worse?

I grew up here in the 70’s, witnessed the white flight, of the early late 70’s early 80’s .The racial tensions of the late 80’s early 90’s, but for some reason things are worse today. I don’t want to hear the garbage that it’s the immigrants fault; I come from Italian immigrant parents myself, and have immigrant neighbors who care more about our community then most of my the people I know who grew up here. What I’m trying to figure out is what’s going on here? Why if Somerville is prospering so much are things getting worse? What can we do, and how can we do it? The community needs to come together on this one, and not post blame rather come up with a way to fix it.
