Inman Square

Congratulations to Brickbottom after 20 years. Its a good addition to Somerville. The issue of gentification is tough, and in retrospect, unavoidable. However, it is difficult to reconcile the higher expectation of more affluent Brickbottom residents with the commercial uses that continue nearby. Hopefully over time these inherent conflicts will get resolved as the commercial uses transform from industrial to office/research uses.

So where to the starving beret-wearing artists find affordable space now? Everett? It would have been great to lock up 10 percent or more of the units in Brickbottom with permanent affordability restrictions in 1988, but its too late for that.

Lowell and Pawtucket have both had some success in luring artists.
