Claire Norman Warton

I've always loved Doty's attention to death, to beauty, and to the larger things in life. He writes straight, never stern, never judgementally. We don't choose to be poets - it chooses us. It certainly chose Mark Doty. He came up to me I don't know why at one of his readings at Portland State University, as if he knew something. That I might be a listener and watcher that would one day write a poetry book. He knew! Just finished _Enduring Friendships_ (dead and alive) and I thank you now, Mark Doty. He has a sixth sense when he writes.
