Bill, you are just a deranged libaloon like so many others in Somerville! I'm a conservative and proud to be one. I like booze, whores and gambling. And I want the government to stay out of it.

Excellent column bill. Your description of the essence, and what was good, about both liberal and conservative philosophies succinctly captures their essence. Your examples highlight how politicians who call themselves liberal or conservative have betrayed those philosophies.

Are you saying that we should all just abandon those definitions? Or that liberals and conservatives should reach some consensus among themselves about what the terms now mean, under the new historical circumstances that you talk about.

I did not post this message (the ahole who wants to be me did), but it's pretty much dead on. So...I am the real IMUX and I endorse this message.

Well Truth,

It would be great if "liberals and conservatives should reach some consensus among themselves about what the terms now mean, under the new historical circumstances." But it seems as if those in leadership positions will, for the foreseeable future, slap those terms on any positions that they favor in order to enlist their followers support. So what I'm advocating is that we as citizens ignore the labels and make choices based on the proposals themselves. And that we try to answer the questions that I laid out at the end of the column.

Imux,

Thanks for the clarification. Always a pleasure to hear from you.
