In August, federal agents swooped into the city to arrest alleged gang members. Immigration advocates said the raids spread fear throughout the entire community.

What the hell they're here ilegally! Fear? Fear is having to walk down and get a quart of milk in East Somerville now. They need to get the fire cannons out and start hosing those immigrants out of there and back to wherever they came from.

Not everyone agrees on what to do about the illegal immigrant population, but I think most agree that the gangs need to be dealt with. If they truly are cracking down on the gangs, then I applaud them. I don't care if they are legal or illegal. Get them off the streets!

I've heard (don't know if it is true), that MS-13 gang members that are arrested and deported to El Salvador are also being dealt with over there. The US is working with El Salvador to make sure that they when they arrive in El Salvador, they are imprisoned so that they don't make their way back to the US or end up causing more crime in El Salvador.

East Somerville has been neglected for years. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for IKEA jobs. Assembly Sq. hasn't changed in several years since the reopened the old mall. Its oprobably 6-8 years before they open and sell their first cheap lamp.

Take a stand!

"Another part of the action plan will be to start a rapid response network for immigrants during times of crisis."
This illustrates perfectly the problems created by liberal politicians. How about a rapid response network for CITIZENS or even RESIDENTS during times of crisis. Creating a 'special' program for immigrants does nothing but polarize people. The job of city government is to provide services for the people, not to provide special services for special people.
"Mary Lu Mendonca of the city’s Human Rights Commission said her organization will set up a plan to help immigrants in times of crisis....the network would educate and prepare East Somerville families for immigration raids."
If the city spends one dime on this program we need a class action lawsuit to be filed. City Dollars are not collected from the resident taxpayers to be given to illegal residents.
"In August, federal agents swooped into the city to arrest alleged gang members. Immigration advocates said the raids spread fear throughout the entire community."
If I were living in Spain or Brazil or Russia illegally, I would be in fear every day. Criminals live in fear, how dare a city employee blame it on the government trying to enforce the law. How about my civil rights, Ms. Mendonca???

“If you compare East Somerville to West Somerville, they look like two different worlds right now."

There may be a reason for that (look in the mirror)
Learn english, get an education and do the same for your children, while keeping them off the streets and away from gangs and maybe East Somerville will start to improve.

Also, why does a job opportunity have to be a "short walk away from the neighborhood"?

Ron Newman

One good reason for Ikea to hire people that are a short walk away is to reduce traffic and demand for parking.

Yorktown Street

There's a waiting list for English classes at SCALE that's three times as big as the number of students they can serve.

You two moonbats need to get it through your fatheads that we aren't paying for ILLEGAL immigrants to have "special" programs. If immigrants file the proper paperwork and are legal immigrants then - yes, of course helping them learn english makes sense. For those who come here illegally WHY should our tax dollars go FOR ANY of these programs (SCALE, Immigration crisis BS, and more).

Ron, I have not seen anyone get bent over as often as you do since Jenna Jameson starred in Anal Assault.

Ron Newman

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Of course you wouldn't.

Tired of being the sugardaddy

"Mary Lu Mendonca of the city’s Human Rights Commission said her organization will set up a plan to help immigrants in times of crisis. She said the network would educate and prepare East Somerville families for immigration raids."

Citizens need to be up in arms over this! How is it that certain groups should have the privilege of social services based solely on the fact that they are law breakers?
As a taxpayer (to the tune of about $5K per year) this makes me fume. It is just like when I am reminded each school year that I earn too much to afford free school lunch for my kids. Meanwhile the children of illegal imigrants get lunch for free, and yet, they pay $0 in city taxes and $0 in federal incorme tax.
Also, with regard to IKEA, if they are a law abiding employer they cannot hire illegals. Though I am sure we will see the Human Rights Commission lobby for special dispensation for IKEA to break the law to help the poor illegal imigrants.
Why is this issue for city officials to grasp?

cee

Whats the issue on these superbugs and other types of germs .Where do you think they come from U.S. I dont think soo.I point the finger at our politics.

That didn't improve with repetition.

Working Class Joe from Winter Hill

I wonder how many people who work for the Somerville Communiy Development Corporation have some sort of roots in Somerville. I know I will get yelled at for saying "New vs. Old" but for some reason everyone I seem to meet these days who works for the City or State seems to be from California, Wisconsin, Ohio, New York or someplace else. Just strikes me as odd that someone from the burbs with a policy/planning degree has more say in what goes in in city/state government then someone who spent their lives on the streets.

rachelfromtheville

WOW. if i had known i could drop the F bomb every other word on here, i woulda done it long ago!

rachelfromtheville

and BTW...i might have to agree with Working Class Joe from Winter Hill. I will never understand how people can run this state/city when they have no clue what the people in it are all about.

rachelfromtheville

imux...are you talking to me ?

William Hurst

What gives this city the right to use our tax dollars on helping people who are here illegally? What is this city planning to do before or after a raid? How are "WE"
helping? Is it humanitarian aid or are we going to help fund attorneys? PEOPLE, I beg you to please watch the National Geo Explorer special on cable TV. It is called "Worlds most dangerous gangs". MS-13 is real, it is growing and it is larger and more dangerous than any of us could have imagined.
Signed "HILLARY equals HIGHER TAXES"

Kate

"Meanwhile the children of illegal imigrants get lunch for free, and yet, they pay $0 in city taxes and $0 in federal incorme tax."

Tired-
I hear you, and I sympathize with you in general, but actually, on these 3 particular points, only: the owners, of homes from whom these illegals are renting, are paying the city taxes. Not all illegals hold under-the-table jobs, so those that don't are paying income tax. Regarding the free English classes, every city offers them.

Kate

William - I saw a show approx. a year ago, regarding MS-13 members in prisons in El Salvador; I would never have imagined such conditions, where the inmates have such 'freedom' within the prison/jail. The MS-13 gang members are recycled back to El Salvador, only to travel through Mexico and cross the border, again, into the US.

Imux

Rach, no... I think you and I usually agree.

Kate, good to see you pull back from the edge of that moonbat cliff. Ron took the plunge a long time ago and he is a lost cause, but at least you agree we need to ship these criminals out.

Response

TO Kate:
"Not all illegals hold under-the-table jobs, so those that don't are paying income tax."
If you're illegal and you're paying social security taxes, then you're doing it by committing identity theft, plain and simple. You're either using a false SS number, or are using someone else's SS number.
"Regarding the free English classes, every city offers them."
No reason that my tax dollars needs to fund them. It's admirable that they want to learn english, but why don't they pay for it? If I want to go to night school, I have to pay.
Go to the schools sometime....if you have an accent they automatically give you free lunch, whether you've even applied or not!

Kate

Response - I'm not trying to split hairs, but there is a big difference between someone who uses another's real name and SS # and someone who makes up a false number to use with their own name. The latter is not stealing anyone's identity. Obviously, all employers are not verifying the authenticity of SS #'s.

Regarding night school, it makes sense that there would be a charge.

I hear ya, regarding our tax dollars. My daughter was teaching ESL at one of the libraries last year; she did it as a volunteer. There were people from Pakistan, Ghana, El Salvador, Brazil and China.

Kate

Imux - there is something wrong with your reading comprehension, if you think I'm on your team.

FED UP WITH ILLEGALS

This so called "community meeting" doesn't surprise me.

The Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) has been harrassing me and trying to get me to join their organization for months. They send mailings, call me at home and recently came to my house. It is very offensive.

On occasion they hold these "community meetings", which is merely a bait for unsuspecting Somerville residents to attend a meeting regarding an important issue in their neighborhood, when there is infact a hidden agenda.

Their main agenda is to increase group membership, so they can collect an annual fee that they charge to be a member. If you don't join, they are relentless in their pursuit to get you to join.

However, their main agenda (which always comes out in the wash at one of their meetings) is to show their support of illegal immigrants, many of whom are members of their group. This is the main reason I refuse to join. I do will not participate in any group or activity that is pro-illegal. Forget about it!

The Somerville Community Corporation (SCC)and Community Action Agency of Somerville (CASS) are both pro-illegal. So, if you do not agree with their pro-illegal agenda, I would advise that you stay clear of both organizations.

FED UP WITH ILLEGALS

In my previous posting, I forgot to mention that at these "community meetings" that the Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) holds, they have all kinds of interpreters for all the illegals who refuse to learn the official language of the United States: English. Therefore, this pro-illegal organization accommodates them in their own native tongue. If they were really concerned about the community they would offer those illegal group members courses to learn the English language. What a bunch of phonies and hypocrites in that group!

IKEA HATER

I find it amusing that this group holds meetings with illegal immigrants as members and is demanding that Ikea gives preference to Somerville residents when hiring. But, I guess they won't be hiring any illegals over there...or will they? What don't the illegals understand?

SOMERVILLE SPY

What infuriates me about this article is how they are holding meetings on immigration raids in this organization.

So, the illegals are living in fear? Good! They should be. They are subject to arrest and deportation by the Federal Government. They are living in violation of our laws and should not be protected or exempt from obeying the laws of this country like anyone else.

Imux

Finally some people who agree with me about the illegals and the need to just allow the feds access to throw them out. What's with all these meetings and discussions about illegals? We know what to do! They're here illegally - they're breaking the law - get them out of here. SIMPLE SOLUTION.

Erica

I am a member of SCC and have been involved in a few efforts with them. Just wanted to point out that I think a majority of the staff at SCC actually does live in Somerville, including some who grew up here. If it's not a majority it's close...Either way, when they do something like helping residents in East Somerville to organize - the goal is not to do the planning themselves, but to help community residents create their own plans. The 350 people who got together in East Somerville are not taking direction from SCC staff - they're setting and going after their own goals. The agenda is actually set by the people who show up to their meetings and participate.
