YAY!

This is great news! Based on the fact that one of those arrested lives on River Road.....isn't that the address for the Mystic Projects? Has the city/state begun eviction proceedings for any family members living there? The law says that the families of law-breakers will be evicted from the subsidized housing complex.

Good for Us

Now Joe will start complaining about the fact that they're deporting these 'poor' people. It's time to make a stand against crime. Send back all illegal aliens that commit criminal acts.

Somerville Resident

Joe ought to be careful about making silly claims such as those if he wants to get reelected.

Daves

It is still a felony to aid and abet an illegal alien. If some honest men and women, in law enforcement, would go after the bottom feeders in the government, business and the general population that have been aiding and abetting them, by the time they had enough of a handle on it to raise their heads from the job and look around I don't think many illegal aliens would still be left. We don't need any new laws to do this either. Just some honest men and women that take their oaths of office seriously! Finding them is the first step! Federal Immigration and Nationality Act Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii) "Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both." Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A): A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he: * assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or * encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or * knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.

Hire U.S. citizen taxpayer workers and pay a reasonable, living wage with benefits and then your business will run smoothly. Employers need to start to look over their shoulder from now on, because THE PEOPLE are watching.

As a citizen of this country and a patriot, use your eyes and ears to detect suspicious circumstances in your work-place or elsewhere. It really is your duty as an American to report illegal aliens who are working on a stolen or otherwise fraudulent I.D, especially in large corporations, factories or other work-sites. You can help to save the jobs of U.S. citizens. Our internal Immigration enforcement like (ICE) should be contacted. Be a whistleblower and save America from the silent invasion. This phenomenon is not going away, unless we do our part?

Democracy

Regardless of whether I feel sorry for the personal circumstances of these people, I agree that this duplicity has to end. If it's illegal, then IT IS ILLEGAL and it has to end. Employers are responsible as much as the employees.

legalatina

Massachusetts, including Boston and its surrounds has become a sanctuary city for illegal aliens. The idiotic statements made by this law enforcement official after arresting dangerious, violent illegal alien gang members that law enforcement won't enforce federal immigration laws is incredibly dangerous. Why? Because he's basically once again declaring to all illegal aliens in his area that as long as they don't commit serious crimes, they are free to do as they please w/o having to worry about police enforcing any laws against them. Boston wouldn't have the gang problem nor the illegal alien crime problem if it stopped its sanctuary policies. EVery crime committed by an illegal alien is 100% preventable if our borders were secured, our laws enforced, sanctuary policies outlawed, and all law enforcement would abide by the 287(g) agreements.

Grog29

They should have done thise YEARS ago! But the "progressives" here in LaLa Land decided to protect the child raping illegal aliens in our midst! These politicians should be held liable
for past crimes these foreign hoods have done over the years. Somerville is also liable if they catch and release any of these illegals and they comit any additional crimes. The Sanctuary Ordinance is a liability to the taxpayers of this city! New York City ended theirs because of liability issues.

Kate

Is Somerville officially a sanctuary city?

Mike

How is it that a nice state like Ma. keeps re-electing Ted (there ain't no Mexicans in Hyanisport) Kennedy? Don't you realize that the whole country suffers from his destructive leadership? MS-13 is in every state now thanks in part to his 1965 immigration bill.

Ron Newman

I think your ire is more properly directed at Ronald Reagan. If he hadn't supported the ARENA party death squads in El Salvador, that country's civil war would have quickly ended, or maybe not even started, and there would have been no need for Salvadorans to flee to the US as refugees in the 1980s.

The Patriot

I'm more ired at you Ron, for letting Osama's boys hide out in the santuaries you and your group created around Boston.

Ares

We didn't have crime like this when America was segregated and violent non-whites were dealt with accordingly. Now we actually have to worry about latin american death squads moving into our small towns. Couple that with the fact that the states and the feds are moving other groups of violent non-whites out of the inner cities and into the white suburbs, which the govt is currently trying to take gun rights away from, thereby leaving the whites defenseless. It's so obvious that a non-white army is being assembled by our govt right at our front doors and will be used to attack and kill us.

Cabbie

Ron is factually correct, MS13 is actually what the CIA would call "Blow Back". Look it up. The Patriot is an idiot - Osama is hiding in the States thanks to Sanctuary Cities? Is Pakistan a Sanctuary City? And Mike, you've been listening to Howie Carr too much. Was there an MS13 in 1965? Yep, this is a problem Ted should have seen coming. Bush can't learn from mistakes this country made in '65 but Ted (in '65) should have known MS13 would be an issue in 30 years?

Diogenes

"The Patriot" isn't an idiot. He's fairly intelligent, actually. But he's not at all what he represents himself to be. He's an aging Youth for Reagan fanatic who enjoys assuming fictional identities and provoking anyone left of Curtis LeMay. Since his significant other took the kid and left, he's got some time on his hands. We would all be better off if he confined his remarks to his own publication, and about his own community.

Ian Santiago

These third world vermin should never have been allowed into our country in the first place. The politicians responsible for creating this multiracial pigsty should be put on trial for treason.

Brookline Born and Raised!

Viva la Raza Blanca!!

Kate

Ares - 'when America was segregated and violent non-whites were dealt with accordingly'. What twisted thinking that is.

Ian Santiago - so you're not part of this 'multiracial pigsty', then you must be an space alien.

Mike is Right

Sorry, Ron and the others, but Mike is right. The immigration problems we're facing now do go back to Ted Kennedy's immigration bill of 1965. No, there were no prophets who could have foreseen MS13 specifically, however, intelligent people should have foreseen the chaos which would ensue after the passage of that bill. It is why we are now overrun with immigrants, both legal and illegal, who have no sponsors, no education, no job training. It is also why one immigrant is able to then bring their entire family here, including elderly relatives who immediately go on Social Security. It is also why most immigrants today are from Latin America and South America, and there are so few from Europe, Japan, etc.

Brickbottom

"Bradley has said repeatedly that local police should not be used to enforce federal immigration laws. “We don’t ask for green cards, and we don’t care whether someone is here legally or illegally,” he said at a July 10 public meeting. At the meeting, he said if local police become involved in immigration violations, they would lose trust in immigrant communities."

Enough said. This guy should lead our Police Force????? What a joke!

Somerville Resident

Does anyone know the details about this "bringing all your family here and have them immediately go on Social Security" business? It sounds like a major exaggeration to me. If a legal immigrant brings here an old mother, is it true that this person is immediately and automatically going to be on SS? If so, that IS unfair. Anybody who has not contributed to should not get SS (of course, disability cases etc are exceptions).

George Hasset,

I have been reading some of your post's from "The American for Legal Immigration" blog, I can't believe you have posted 1537 times in a little over two month's. You should share your feeling's on this blog like you do on the other. I think people would have a better understanding of your views.

George Hasset, do you believe in this platform?

As a blogger on ALIPAC, do you adhere to this platform?

"Our Platform"

"ALIPAC supporters have a diverse range of opinions, yet we are united in the belief that more should be done to reduce illegal immigration.

ALIPAC supports those that legally immigrate, but we DO NOT support any amnesty, visa expansion, or "Guest Worker" program designed to reward illegal aliens or legalize their presence in the US.

America is a land of generous and caring people, but our hospitality and values are being strained and abused by those who are willing to break the law and take our jobs and our tax dollars.

America's illegal alien population will begin to shrink instead of grow if we support candidates that will reflect the will of the vast majority of American citizens.

FOUR POINT PLATFORM: "Simply enforce our existing immigration laws!"

1. Secure Our Borders 2. Crack down on employers that intentionally hire illegals 3. Remove incentives and rewards to illegals such as licenses, welfare, and other taxpayer benefits 4. Enforce our existing laws and deport illegal aliens when convicted of crimes or detected during routine law enforcement activities

Many ALIPAC supporters also believe

-- Congress should make English the official language of America!

-- State and Local police should help enforce immigration laws!

-- We firmly oppose any Guest Worker / Temporary Worker Program which is disguised AMNESTY legislation. -- Legal and law abiding Americans should not be subjected to privacy invading technologies or national ID."

Grog29

No Somerville Resident; it's NOT an exaggeration. Elderly immigrants brought here through Kennedy's "chain migration" can get SSI and MassHealth. Tons are doing it. SSI is a supplemental federal taxpayer programd "for those that did not pay into the system".

Also, "elderly" in most cases is treated as a "disability". So they are all eligible and they ALL know how to work the system. Democrats love these people because they become their constituents as soon as they arrive.

Latino Community, How they feel about Somerville.

without knowing anything about this other blog you refer to or if george posts over there or not - i find it very distasteful that you would just "out" his personal views here on this blog. assume for a minute that george is a professional in his job as senior editor for a minute...why would he post personal views on the very site that he works at as an unbiased news reporter?

he wouldnt. which is why he doesnt. his singular personal views, no matter what they may be, have little to do with the view of this newspaper and certainly isnt reflected in his reporting the news in the print and online editions of this newspaper.

thats assuming that you are correct and that person you refer to is even george. i suspect you might not have thought too long about your comment before pulling the trigger, because while you do have a tendency to fly off the handle every once in a while, even for you - i find it very very disrespectful and completely distasteful.

theres no excuse for what you just did. if you want to tussle with this newspaper and its views, bring it my way, not georges and id appreciate it if you didnt bring his personal views into view here when its clear that he doesnt and with good reason.

jn

Grog29

Hey Ron-
You get worse at the facts as each day goes by.

Read the article, these thugs were held on "federal immigration law violations", meaning that they are ILLEGAL ALIENS!

They aren't "refugees".
God!...are you extreme left-wing radicals desperate or what?

brickbottom

JN,

If he didn't want his personal views aired here then why on the other blog did he put the Somerville News link at the bottom of his post?

brickbottom

Jn,

I forgot to add that link led directly to the article he published here.

James Norton

brickbottom -

look, you're not getting it. if theres a link on his postings there, then you're right - that is on him - but, you're missing my point about why he may or may not be posting his personal views on THIS site. aside from that, why is it your duty to call him out on his personal views here and not just leave it there to argue with him, if that's your intention? what you did reeks of malice and intent to cause him harm and indirectly, cause harm to this publication - these are the things i have to deal with as the editor of this newspaper and i take them all very seriously and hope you can respect that.

it all boils down to the difference between whatever blog that is and this one - that one he may or may not post his personal views - and this one he does not because of his sense of professionalism.

again i just find it distasteful you would do that to anyone merely because you have a different opinion. enough said.

jn

brickbottom

JN,

I am not being malicious and didn't mean anyone harm. I don't know Hassert from a hole in the wall, but I have conversed with you and respect your views. If you feel what I did was wrong then so be it. It wasn't meant to be distasteful or disrespectful. If you feel that way then accept my apology. As you know I never shy away from a "tussel" with anyone, but on this one you may be right.

At least you didn't call me an asshole!!!!!

Fool on the Hill

No one can receive retirement payouts from the social security trust fund who has not paid into it. The contention that SSI administrators equate being elderly to being disabled would be bizarre if it weren't such a pathetic attempt at demagoguery.

CheechChong

You truly are a fool (read the last sentence). Grog29 was correct about SSI.

Supplemental Security Income
SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low incomes and few resources. To get SSI, you also must be 65 or older, blind or disabled. Children as well as adults may qualify for SSI disability payments.

The federal government pays a basic benefit and some states add money to that amount. Check with your local Social Security office for the SSI payment amount in your state. Generally, people who get SSI also can get Medicaid, food stamps and other assistance.

You do not have to have worked to get SSI payments. SSI payments are financed through general tax revenues, not through Social Security taxes.

Social Security

Another odd aspect of this discussion, is that apparently aliens need fewer units of time paid into Social Security to be eligible to receive payments. Can anyone verify this?

CheechChong

They can't get on Social Security easliy, but SSI they can. All they do is bring an old geezer from the "barrio" to live with them, have said old geezer limp around a bit and voila! - SSI benefits. SSI comes out of general tax revenues, not through Social Security taxes.

WE ALL PAY for them.

The cops should be enforcing the law of the land - if you're illegal then "aste luego, baaaby!".

Hasnt Ben Sober

Just one thing.....ted Kennedy has always .......SUCKED as a human being just look what he did to his first wife Joan. He turned her into a basket case and left her by the road side. With that type of behavoir do you think he actually has a caring bone in his body for the taxpayers he claims to represent ? the Kennedy's and the Bulgers have everything in common that true Irish political families have in common......THEY ARE VERY GREEDY and have serious mental deficiancies through out their family tree AND THEY ALL 'SUCK' THE BIGGEST PHONIES IN THE WORLD....they will all receive their just rewards in the after life......

George Hassett

Hi Brickbottom,

Why are you saying I comment on this immigration blog? To put it simply I don't. I never heard of this organization until you made the comment about me participating in them. If a link to the Somerville News website is included in a comment, that means I am the commenter? That's not fair. It's pretty simple: you're wrong. I don't share the views of this organization, I'm not Nouveauxpoor and to be honest, I don't agree with that platform. I usually like to stay out of the blogging but I figured I should address comments directed at me. Thank you,

George

Ron Newman

I'm going to take George at his word, and ask Brickbottom what led him to the false conclusion that George posted to that blog as 'Nouveauxpoor'.

Ron Newman

Grog29: I did not say that the alleged MS-13 members arrested here last month were 'refugees'. I said that the flow of Salvadorans to the US began in the 1980s with refugees fleeing the ARENA Party death squads that were supported by President Reagan.

Immigration

Newman, I don't see where your comment is particularly relevant. This problem is far larger than one group of 'refugees' from one country. Although most original MS-13 members originated from El Salvador, I think you'll find that they have recruited many members from other countries as well. I can understand that it gave you a chance to place the blame on a Republican, but it really doesn't fly. Today's immigration nightmare is the direct cause of Senator Ted Kennedy's immigration bill in 1965.

Grog29

It's called backpedalling. He refers to refugees of the 1980s (legal residents) in a thread about illegal alien MS-13 gangmembers... insinuating that we caused them to come here because "America is so bad"; then backpedals when the
ludicrous comparison is challenged. I tell yah, it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

It's all he does

Grog29,
Nice points. That's all Newman does is throw out a few irrelevant points until he's forced to backpedal.

He's a complete joke on this site.

Skeptic

Actually, Ron is one of the few voices here who make ANY sense. Of course, most of the other voices probably come from the same person using different names at different times and arguing with him/herself.

It's all he does

Maybe you're Ron Newman propping yourself up.

On nearly every story, Ron will say something completely out of line and then get slapped down by someone who knows the subject Ron was mouthing off about. He's not well informed.

Believer

I think that't the best assessment of Ron Newman I have seen here. He's not a bad person, he just isn't well informed and has a little too high an opinion of his own intelligence. I still remember when he spell corrected someone announcing the funeral arrrangements of someone on this site.

Not malicious, I think, but certainly bad judgement.

Ron Newman

What was incorrect in my statement about how Salvadoran immigration to the US started?

cabbie

Nothing Ron. As is often the case you made the mistake of using facts to back up an opinion. For most people on this site - at least many- reality isn't determined by facts. It's determined by the HannityLimbaughSevernFeinbergCarr et. al. spin machine. I don't know if you understand this Mr. Newman since- my impression - you're over in your own bicycle committee/Davis Sq./LeftWing island. Not a bad place. I escaped the Regan Administration under similar circumstances.

Now follow along. Just because someone on radio or tv didn't TELL you to believe it doesn't change the simple fact that what Ron said is true. In the 80s Reagan pretty much meddled in the business of most of Central America, including El Salvador. MS13 was brought to the US by Salvadoran refugees who were fleeing the "democratic" government the Reagan administration supported. A "democratic" government that, among other egregious violations of human rights, had death squads. As I said, this is what the CIA would call Blowback, an unintended consequence of our involvement with a foreign government.

Now as for Ron's constant need to correct the spelling and grammar of the Somerville News. I've noticed. And I've also noticed he keeps his corrections to the NEWS, not others on the site. This is supposed to be the Somerville News site - not Some Guy's website. People at "real" sites get in trouble for not spotting typos and for using atrocious grammar. Look at at this way - you don't want spit in your soup, why are you accepting typos in your news? I've seen some cringe worthy mistakes that tell me if the Somerville News were an electrician, he'd have burned down your house. The solution is to make Newman an offer. He's the new proof reader for the site. Or he shuts the hell up and lives with the outcome.

Frauds

cabbie,
You said, "I escaped the Regan Administration under similar circumstances." Hmmm, escaping the Regan Administration? That must mean you were an inmate at a Federal prison.

Listen, you and Newman are frauds attributing the MS-13 problem to Reagan in the '80's. If you guys were truly armed with 'facts' then you would know that MS-13 was formed in Los Angeles CA in 1972. How could Reagan's national policies in the 80's affect that?

It's been said before and I'm sure it's true: Ron's a nice guy. He's grossly uninformed , however, and he uses false information on this site all the time.

And cabbie, as was posted above, he corrected a funeral posting for a recently departed person posted by a relative. Not very nice.

Don't let your view of politics think that you can re-invent the 'facts' that you folks post here.

SPIN

Cabbie: Are you always so patronizing? It must be difficult to have to always correct all the little people who are so stupid and don't have a clue until you enlighten them. You criticize people for getting their information from the "HannityLimbaughSevernFeinbergCarr et. al. spin machine". I'm guessing you get your news from the "NPRFrankenColmesGoodmanHuffington et. al. spin machine". Same sport, different players.

William Hurst

The notion that an individual cannot collect Social Security benefits without paying into the fund is wrong. Payouts are based on what you put into the fund. People having never contributed can still collect but the payout is much smaller. Hope this information helps.
Even though he is a sponsor of the new immigration reform bill, Senator John McCain admits that there are millions of felons that will be legalized when the new immigration law passes.
I can hear it now, just listen.
"After a nation wide search. We, the citizens of Somerville are very fortunate to have been able to find an individual who possesses the leadership skills needed to make this Police Department what it once was, one of the finest in this country. He has the admiration of his peers and the respect of all those he has worked with. Maintaining an open door policy he will create an atmosphere of respect and camaraderie which this department has never experienced before. Never one to back down, he speaks his mind and puts the safety of the community ahead of himself and his job. It is my honor to introduce to you the next Police Chief for the city of Somerville Robert R Bradley.

Grog29

Hey Cabbie-
Ron's strange convoluted logic that "fleeing Salvadoran refugees" from the 1980s were the cause of illegal alien gangs like MS-13 raping little disabled girls and causing other crime in 2007 is what caused his little "blow-back".
Apparantly (he and you believe) Reagan
started (or prolonged) a civil war because he preferred freedom and elections instead of Stalinistic dictators running things in Central America.

Apart from his statements being ludicrous, he is actually saying that legal
immigrants (refugees) are the cause of illegal alien criminals. That's bordering on racism (i.e. "all Salvadorans are alike")

Also, the "blowback" AGAINST illegal aliens (including the violent ones who you and Ron are insinuating are "victims" of Reagan and evil America) arrived when the Kennedy/Shummer/Reid/Durbin/Spector/Graham/McCain amnesty was exposed and went down in flames due to citizen outrage.

Enjoying your blow-back?

Ian Santiago

Kate,

I am White, and thus I am a REAL American. Please, peruse the following document and pay close attention to the first line.

Passed by the United States Congress,
“An act to establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization” (March 26, 1790).
TEXT SOURCE: 1 Stat. 103-104. edited version: De Pauw, Linda Grant, et al., eds. Documentary History of the First Federal Congress of the United States of America, March 4, 1789 – March 3, 1791. 14 vols. to date. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1972-1995. 6:1516-1522.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, That any Alien being a free white person, who shall have resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States for the term of two years, may be admitted to become a citizen thereof on application to any common law Court of record in any one of the States wherein he shall have resided for the term of one year at least, and making proof to the satisfaction of such Court that he is a person of good character, and taking the oath or affirmation prescribed by law to support the Constitution of the United States, which Oath or Affirmation such Court shall administer, and the Clerk of such Court shall record such Application, and the proceedings thereon; and thereupon such person shall be considered as a Citizen of the United States. And the children of such person so naturalized, dwelling within the United States, being under the age of twenty one years at the time of such naturalization, shall also be considered as citizens of the United States. And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens: Provided, that the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States: Provided also, that no person heretofore proscribed by any States, shall be admitted a citizen as aforesaid, except by an Act of the Legislature of the State in which such person was proscribed.
