The big question is what happened to the monument at Trum Field? That was not supposed to be removed, according to the Strategic Planning Department at the last public hearing. Lots of people are wondering what is going on. Is this a case of saying one thing and doing another?

July 29th around Somerville has three birthdays each year that make it hard to forget… Marisa Tauro - the lovely wife of Billy Tauro - of the well-known and famous Tauro family - is 39 again and we have no reason to doubt her. Patti Norton - the mother of our editor and the wife of Donald Norton - is also celebrating her birthday and one of her best presents was 14 years ago - the birth of grandson Corey Norton - who has grown up to be another good looking Norton red head (we hear he’s got a girlfriend already).

At the progressives meeting this past month, about 15 members showed up (is it getting smaller and smaller?). Their endorsement of Alderwomen Rebekah for Ward 6 was a slam dunk. No matter what, we would have bet the bank on this one. After all isn’t she credited with being one of the founders?
***********
Looks like Ball Square is the place to be…home of the Breakfast Club members - more breakfast served in and around Ball Square then in any other square in the city we bet. The mayor opened his headquarters this past month in the square as well as one of his opponents. How much you want to bet that Traffic & Parking has a field day in Ball Square?

By the time this comes out on Wednesday (tonight), the now yearly event - Mayor Joe Curtatone Boston Harbor Cruise – will have already happened. We’ve heard that it is another sell out again this year. The organizers of this year’s event did a great job as usual. We know a few of our News Talkers will be on board.

A rumor that has been circling the Middlesex Probate Court this week is that Registrar John Buonomo, because of his close ties with Bill Clinton, has been asked to work on the Hillary Clinton for President campaign full time and if she wins, he would become an important member of the administration. But he has refused! According to one of our News Talkers, John is happy where he is, but will try to help Hillary as much as he can without interfering with his job!

Harold “Butch” Michitson, formerly of Somerville, and the former owner of Carol Ann’s Bake Shop in Medford as well as Harold’s Luncheonette in (Ball Square) Somerville has passed away this past week. Those of us who remember Butch from when we used to eat at the Luncheonette can remember the many memories and good times that accompanied the great food! Butch will be sadly missed, but never forgotten!

We hear that maybe a former Ward 4 School Committee member might get in the sticker campaign in Ward 4’s empty ballot coming up. Wonder who that might be? We still say that the administration should consider doing away with this board.

Looking for something to do on Friday, August 10th? Don’t have a date or don’t have a place to take a date? Head over to Union Square to watch the silent film classic “Big Stakes,” accompanied with a live score of country western and Mexican folk music from Devil Music Ensemble. The Arts Council tells us (they wouldn’t lie to News Talk would they?) that the movie has everything: horse chases, bar room brawls, shoot-outs, corny one-liners and romance (is that everything? It is to us). Word is, no one will get mad if you boo, hiss, or cheer at the movie while tapping your toe and slapping your thigh to the music, which is good because News Talk always talks back to the screen at the movies.
The Somerville Arts Council website says thatthe Union Square event will take place on Friday, August 10. Not this coming Friday.

Thank you, Ron; you saved a lot of people from showing up on the wrong date. It's sounds like fun!
Posted by: Kate | August 01, 2007 at 10:18 AM
Thanks Ron. What a bunch of incompetent lazy bums if they cannot even post the date right!

When a long-standing member of the school committee and former chair of that committee cannot muster enough signatures to be placed on the ballot, it's time to act! Now is the perfect time to dismantle this board (after all, there are only 6 people officially running for seats, as opposed to 7!!). The only power they have is to hire the Superintendent (done), everyhthing else is window dressing, power, and control.

I doubt that either Union Square Main Streets or the Arts Council ever announced the wrong date. The News would greatly benefit from a little copy-editing and fact-checking.
Posted by: Ron Newman | August 01, 2007 at 12:37 PM
Ron, I suggest you be given copy-editing responsibilities for The News! I'd be happy to assist :)

wow you assholes are like little kids...seriously. don't bother sending an email to george or me saying its the wrong date - just be assholes about it - that's so very classy of you people.

A bit thin-skinned, JN? In the past you've disclaimed responsibility for NewsTalk and said that it was written by an anonymous group of people that don't include either George or yourself.

I thought that there was a policy regarding language on this site....I think it's pretty class-less for the editor/owner of the newspaper to have to resort to vulgarity. I would have thought your vocabulary was a wee bit larger than that.
Posted by: Vocabulary | August 02, 2007 at 11:02 AM
But how do we know that JN really wrote that post? Seriously...
Posted by: Democracy | August 02, 2007 at 11:13 AM
If you were the editor/publisher/owner of this site/newspaper, would you let such a comment, using your name, sit for almost 24 hours without addressing it? I know I wouldn't!
Posted by: Come on.... | August 02, 2007 at 01:26 PM
Of course not. So, why isn't the owner removing it either way? Perhaps they are on vacation.

I believe Masschusetts Education Reform requires each school district to have and operate under a school board. It can not be just "dismantled" because someone thinks it's a waste of money.
Changes needed? Yes.
Do away with? No.
Posted by: FYI | August 02, 2007 at 02:15 PM
Can we change the MER then so that each school district does not have etc...?

I think Ron Newman is cute. Is he single?
Posted by: Boobsy McHugh | August 03, 2007 at 04:10 PM
I don't know if Ron is single, but I saw him first! He's mine! Ahahahah! :)
Posted by: Democracy | August 03, 2007 at 05:46 PM
Ron Newman is on wikipedia. My god, I think someone famous blogs with us. Your right, he is pretty cute. Makes Joe Curtone look ugly.
Posted by: Yum Yum Yum | August 03, 2007 at 11:25 PM
I don't like Joe Curtatone's looks. He looks like a mousey on steroids! :)
Posted by: Somerville Resident | August 04, 2007 at 12:16 AM
Joe Curtatone is not mousey.

The "Big Stakes" event in Union Square, originally scheduled for tonight, has been postponed to Sunday, August 12 due to possible rain.
