Machines inside of the Rogers Foam factory at 20 Vernon St. caught fire today, producing clouds of black smoke that could be seen for miles. The fire spread from inside the factory to its tar roof which caused the smoke clouds to be thick and heavy, said Deputy Fire Chief Dave Salvi.
One firefighter tore back ligaments during the effort to extinguish the blaze, but no one else was hurt. The building suffered extensive damage, said Salvi. He said damages were estimated, “at least in the tens of thousands, if not hundreds.”
The building at 20 Vernon St. also houses work space for dozens of artists, known as the Vernon Street Studios. That side of the building, he said, was not affected by the flames.
Any sign of Engine 4 at the fire?

Engine 4 was safely parked out-of-service at the Lowell Street station. Kind of like the night of Henderson St where 4 kids were trapped on the second floor.

...and both fires were fought expertly. The response time and the actual fighting of the fire were tremendous. There was absolutely no need to have Engine 4 there. Well unless you are looking for overtime for us?

"absolutely no need to have Engine 4 there. Well unless you are looking for overtime for us?" Sounds like the Mayors cronies are surfing the web on the cities dime. Engine 4 was the 2nd due fire engine at both fires. With the fiasco at Henderson St., that could have been a different outcome because of the illeagally parked cars and access difficulty. Not looking for OT, just basic quality of service for the people, and safety for the firefighters. Smokey, are you saying the city doesn't care about firefighter safety ??
