James Norton

Grand Total -

Thanks for not reposting the entire article here. This is an important issue and can be researched elsewhere.

I will say this much, though: good for Arnold for doing the right thing and not sticking to the "party line" on the issue of environmental protection.

Since the Montreal Protocol of 1987, much has been done to reverse the damage done to the thinning ozone layer and just yesterday Reuters reported about a new analysis that brings new hope for future generations.

That along with Arnold doing the right thing - should empower us to do more in this area. Okay enough earthy-crunchy crap out of my mouth for the day.

James Norton

Somerville Observer -

Wow I guess the so called "progressives" can't handle the heat, huh? What are you their mouthpiece? First Ron is mediating some kind of misreporting instead of that person calling herself and now you with this crap? Are you people cuckoo for cocoa puffs or what today?

Give us a break - newstalk is a rumor column - do you need me to post the definition of rumor for you? Go ahead and name one Alderman who hasn't had something said about him or her in newstalk. You can't. That is, for the 100th time, because newstalk is a compilation of snippets of factual information with some rumors and other things heard on the street from over a dozen different people.

Nobody is safe when it comes to this section of the paper - deal with it. Newstalk isn't the news and it isn't a singular person's opinion. It's been the same way it is now for at least 20 years.

So get a grip on reality and welcome to the world where if you have something to say, it might not go over well with someone else, and vice-versa. maybe you're just one of those planted pod people I love so much, which wouldn't surprise me in the least, especially today.

Pop some Haldol, please.

JN

Huckaroo Redux

you people are whackos all of you and yeah JN you hit it right......another friggin plant, in fact i bet its either gerwitz herself or kat powers......think about it, who else has the city ordinances at their fingertips to comment like that? you know her blog doesnt get squat for traffic over there and she watches this one....hell they all do, dont let anyone tell you otherwise

Yorktown Street

The Alderman spelled his name Roche, not Roach, last time I checked. Probably his relatives do the same, whether they're on the City payroll or not!

Dominic Santos

The term "rumor" is defined as:

1. talk or opinion widely disseminated with no discernible source; and

2. a statement or report current without known authority for its truth.

The real question is whether rumors should be reported, and, if so, do reporters have an obligation to contact the subject of the rumor for comment prior to publishing the contents of the rumor. I am not educated in the field of journalism so the first question is one that I will pass. The second question does not involve special skill in journalism for its resolution; rather, it only involves common sense. If The Somerville News, or any publication, is told a story but can not verify it, The Somerville News should contact the subject of the story, or, at least engage in fact checking. In the above story about the Ward 6 Alderman, 10 to 15 minutes of fact checking would have revealed the contents of my prior post, thus negating much of what was written in the News Talk column. The Somerville News is a valuable part of Somerville, but it should take care in publishing so-called rumors and engage in fact checking or, at a minimum, calling the subject of the so-called rumor.

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

Jamie,

Thank you for checking on our friend.

The "Montreal Protocol of 1987"????????????

Ok that's it kid. No more "BBC World" late at night. As a matter of fact, I want you to lay off the Emily Rooney "Greater Boston" segments too.

Jesus All I Ask is Guidance,

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

My Dear Mr. Santos,

Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm just trying to be helpful.

I've taken note of your letter to the Editor and your postings here on the blog. You sound like a very nice, thoughtful and inspired young man.

I also think there may be the beginnings of some thought by you to run for some type of public service position in the future.

Take it from me, you may want to think twice about picking a fight with the media even before you get the old campaign off the ground.

Just a suggestion.

Pax,

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

James Norton

Dominic -

First of all, welcome back after a long time of not posting a comment on here.

Secondly, please don't put links like that on here, we don't particularly like that.

Finally, Dominic, it's a rumor column - period. Reporting the news is different and you know that - that's the part of this publication that requires facts to be checked and verified to the best of the paper's ability - not a rumor column.

If you don't like the content of newstalk or the way and manner in which it is obtained or printed - then either comment with your opinion on here (which is why it is republished on the weblog to begin with) - or just don't read it.

It's okay to comment, definitely okay to disagree and I truly appreciate the fact that you put your own name on your comments on here - but please don't start saying we are irresponsible for not investigating every bloody rumor - because you're wrong.

JN

James Norton

Dr.Mrs.McCarthy -

Sorry about letting intelligence get in the way of this sillyass weblog commenting.

What was I thinking?

JN

Dominic Santos

James:

Thank you for your comment.

I never suggested that The Somerville News is or was irresponsible. If I were making a business decision as to whether or not to fact check a column like News Talk, I would fact check it, and interview the folks discussed in the column. I don't mean to suggest that my path is the correct one, or the only one. The Somerville News, like any publication, will make decisions on what is fit for print. As I stated, "The Somerville News is a valuable part of Somerville." I have and may in the future take objection with what The Somerville News prints; luckily, The Somerville News provides this forum to make that objection.

Thank you for the continued opportunity to comment on the City of Somerville.

Afternoon Delight

James,
As part of my Afternoon Delight (reading this site) I was struck by Mr. Santos' post. He castigates you for not being thorough in checking your facts. However, the definition post he put here failed to state the entire defintion of "rumor." Here's what he missed:

3 archaic : talk or report of a notable person or event
4 : a soft low indistinct sound : MURMUR

Now, Mrs. McCarthy and I are archaic, so to us the post means "talk or report of a notable person or event." So to us, the article is right on target. If it wasn't a rumor piece I wouldn't read it. Keep up the good work James. Dominic, keep up the shoddy work, you're making us all look good.

And please, whatever you do, don't try and ruin my Afternoon Delight. More rumors, damn it! And be quick about it!

Beetlejuice

The good and ancient Doctor said...

"Take it from me, you may want to think twice about picking a fight with the media even before you get the old campaign off the ground."

Why oh why didn't you simply quote your esteemed classmate and contemporary who said (and I quote)...

"Never pick fights with people who buy their ink by the barrel".

I always loved that one.

And to that whack job Grand Total, with his cut-and-paste, I respectfully quote the same Dr. Mrs. McCarthy classmate...

"There's lies, there's damned lies, and there's statistics."

Also, for the information of everyone involved, the Montreal Protocol didn't have a damned thing to do with anything.

Jamie, please don't believe everything you read in the paper (especially your own!). And Dominic, please don't believe everything you read in this column (unless it's about Newman).

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

Afternoon Afternoon Delight,

Here's one from the old rumor dust bin of the notlatedrmrsmccarthy.

Seems that the City Solicitor of the City of Somerville is so taken by the one and only Dr. Mrs. McCarthy, that he emailed her but was too afraid to say anything.

Must have been one of those moments when love did not conquer all, hey Johnny?

Don't be so shy John. Go ahead and profess your undying admiration(or irritation). Just don't let Jamie Norton, Carlos, Julio, or Joe Curtatone catch you. You may just wind up getting the twins knocked out of the hammock.

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

Doug Holder

Congrats to Donald and Pat Norton on their long marriage! Also thanks to the Norton family for their support of the writing community in Somerville!

The Flash

Here we go again.

I wrote a simple post "Where is the Mole? Once I called his bluff, He disappeared faster than a piece of cake on some fat kids plate."

It got deleted. Why?

I'll never understand you Jamie.

You say we have a personality conflict. The only thing that pisses me off about you is your selective editing. Until you post some rules and guidelines, Allow me to exercise my right to free speech. Even if you don’t like what I have to say.

DPW

Its nice to know that the city can afford big fancy dpw trucks meanwhile the men and women of the police department's patrol cars are sub-par, to say the least. I guess its true what people say about Joey's DPW. Thats his baby, Big ole'stankley seems to have Joey by the balls.

The Mole

Ok Flash, Let's get out of the brush here. I cannot keep on coming out to you and the readers and spell out everything as to hand it to you on a platter.

But to start with:

1. SMEA President shoved down our throats the city Proposal even after it was found that he was 1/3 vote short. Why some of my fellow brothers/sisters didn't take it to the next level is beyond me. I alone cannot be erect. That process alone took Mr. President 3 times to get it right. Seems to me that took a bit of stress from him. I am sure he was well compensated though.

2. Behind the scene attacks are and will be on going. Remember for the most part, my endeavors are aimed toward this faulty Administration. If I can keep Joe and his boyz & girls busy, Unit B is getting a reprieve from the nasty arms length of Boss Hog.

3. Wasn't it nice when Mr. President of SMEA was called on his recent renovations to the front of his house? The day after someone, (WINK), posted he supposedly had an illegal dumpster parked in front of his house, it miraculously disappeared. How well do we know these slime balls?

4. Enjoy the Cape this weekend. I hear there is a Hog Run down in Falmouth and Dennis. But beware, there are also a lot of State Troopers out there protecting us little ones.

5. As I stated before, "Silence is Golden". You just never know when they will be coming up behind you to give you a brand new pair of silver bracelets.

The Mole

The Pie Man's Weekly Award!

Dear Dominic Santos, You have been unanimously elected not as an alderman, but as a recipient of this weeks booby prize! A Pie! Just remember when it hits and you hear the magical little jingle of "Who's throwing those pies"! I'll be smiling at you from across the way! Cheers!

P. s.: James, I will send you a photo of this spectacular event!

The Pie Man

Snowflake wants in!

Hey Jamie and Pie Man I got your backs! Do you think that I could get a copy of that photo? Priceless!

Love, Snowflake

Dominic Santos Phone home and go home!

Who is this Dominic Santos clown anyway?

Quoth the mole:

That's sounds like a personal problem, mole-man. Keep it to yourself next time.

Grand total, Your head is so far up your ass it must be very lonely and boring up there, which is why you must have all this free time to think up the insane SHIT you posted.

There are so many things I could argue but I am a stay at home mom with responsibilities and I don't have the free time that you seem to have, to sit and refute everything you have said and back it up with facts. But I can tell you one thing.

As far as the media not being liberal...A number of journalists have admitted that the majority of their brethren approach the news from a liberal angle. During the 2004 presidential campaign, for example, Newsweek’s Evan Thomas predicted that sympathetic media coverage would boost Kerry’s vote by “maybe 15 points,” which he later revised to five points. In 2005, ex-CBS News President Van Gordon Sauter confessed he stopped watching his old network: “The unremitting liberal orientation finally became too much for me.”

In 1981, S. Robert Lichter, then with George Washington University, and Stanley Rothman of Smith College, released a groundbreaking survey of 240 journalists at the most influential national media outlets — including the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS — on their political attitudes and voting patterns. Results of this study of the “media elite” were included in the October/November 1981 issue of Public Opinion, published by the American Enterprise Institute, in the article “Media and Business Elites.” The data demonstrated that journalists and broadcasters hold liberal positions on a wide range of social and political issues. This study, which was more elaborately presented in Lichter and Rothman’s subsequent book, The Media Elite, became the most widely quoted media study of the 1980s and remains a landmark today.

KEY FINDINGS:

* Nearly half of the journalists surveyed agreed that “the very structure of our society causes people to feel alienated,” while the authors found “five out of six believe our legal system mainly favors the wealthy.”

* 30 percent disagreed that “private enterprise is fair to workers;” 28 percent agreed that “all political systems are repressive.”

* 54 percent did not regard adultery as wrong, compared to only 15 percent who regarded it as wrong.

* “Ninety percent agree that a woman has the right to decide for herself whether to have an abortion; 79 percent agree strongly with this pro-choice position.”

* Majorities of journalists agreed with the statements: “U.S. exploits Third World, causes poverty” (56%) and “U.S. use of resources immoral” (57%). Three-fourths disagreed that the “West had helped Third World.”

n 1985, the Los Angeles Times conducted one of the most extensive surveys of journalists in history. Using the same questionnaire they had used to poll the public, the Times polled 2,700 journalists at 621 newspapers across the country. The survey asked 16 questions involving foreign affairs, social and economic issues. On 15 of 16 questions, the journalists gave answers to the left of those given by the public.

KEY FINDINGS:

* Self-identified liberals outnumbered conservatives in the newsroom by more than three-to-one, 55 to 17 percent. This compares to only one-fourth of the public (23 percent) that identified themselves as liberal.

* 84 percent of reporters and editors supported a so-called "nuclear freeze" to ban all future nuclear missile deployment; 80 percent were against increased defense spending; and 76 percent opposed aid to the Nicaraguan Contras.

* 82 percent of reporters and editors favored allowing women to have abortions; 81 percent backed affirmative action; and 78 percent wanted stricter gun control.

* Two-thirds (67%) of journalists opposed prayer in public schools; three-fourths of the general public (74%) supported prayer in public schools.

How the Media Vote. Surveys of journalists’ self-reported voting habits show them backing the Democratic candidate in every presidential election since 1964, including landslide losers George McGovern, Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis. In 2004, a poll conducted by the University of Connecticut found journalists backed John Kerry over George W. Bush by a greater than two-to-one margin.

Journalists’ Political Views: Compared to their audiences, journalists are far more likely to say they are Democrats or liberals, and they espouse liberal positions on a wide variety of issues. A 2004 poll by the Pew Research Center for The People & The Press found five times more journalists described themselves as “liberal” as said they were “conservative.”
n 1981, S. * 81 percent of the journalists interviewed voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in every election between 1964 and 1976.

* In the Democratic landslide of 1964, 94 percent of the press surveyed voted for President Lyndon Johnson (D) over Senator Barry Goldwater (R).

* In 1968, 86 percent of the press surveyed voted for Democrat Senator Hubert Humphrey.

* In 1972, when 62 percent of the electorate chose President Richard Nixon, 81 percent of the media elite voted for liberal Democratic Senator George McGovern.

* In 1976, the Democratic nominee, Jimmy Carter, captured the allegiance of 81 percent of the reporters surveyed while a mere 19 percent cast their ballots for President Gerald Ford.

* Over the 16-year period, the Republican candidate always received less than 20 percent of the media elite’s vote.

* Lichter and Rothman’s survey of journalists discovered that “Fifty-four percent placed themselves to the left of center, compared to only 19 percent who chose the right side of the spectrum.”

* “Fifty-six percent said the people they worked with were mostly on the left, and only 8 percent on the right — a margin of seven-to-one

Why not check out these sites I have here. The Media Research Center continuously reports on instances of the liberal bias in the mainstream media. Daily CyberAlerts offer a regular roundup of the latest instances of biased reporting, while our NewsBusters blog allows Web users to post their own reactions. Media Reality Check fax reports showcase important stories that the news media have distorted or ignored, and several times each year the MRC publishes Special Reports offering in-depth documentation of the media’s bias on specific issues.

But then if you read this post and saw these websites, you would be forced to actually face REALITY and that would probably scare the HELL out of you. You would have to live in a world with the rest of us Plebians instead of the liberal eletist world inhabited by people like our Gigolo Senator Kerry and the murder Ted Kennedy. OH THE THE HORROR!!

Going to Die Here

Dear Julie:

That's one hell of a post for "just a stay-at-home mom." Well done! You've laid out a very convincing case that American journalists, on average, are smarter AND wiser than the American public at large.

I bet a high percentage of journalists can find Canada on a map, also.

Sincerely,

Julie,

You are forgetting that editors and owners of the media -- whom have far more say in what is actually published -- are either conservative or put some spin on it all.

Reporters for the most part are just pod people who know how to speak french.

Now see if you can figure out why America is rated so low on this index

grand total

I have to say my last post was just a gut knee-jerk reaction to what 'Julie' pasted, I mean posted. Although I was not surpirsed to read afterwards that I was not the only one with that very same assesment. And I don't believe all reporters are pod people, you can thank JN, for that comment was aimed at him.

See this quote that is obvoiusly from some web site: "After reading What Liberal Media? you will understand that the real news story of recent years is not whether this newspaper, or that news anchor, is biased but rather to what extent the entire news industry is organized to communicate conservative views and push our politics to the right — regardless of how "liberal" any given reporter may be.

Anyway, it is sort of pointless to go arguing about something that experts can'nt really agree on. Or is it?

That's it? That's all you got? Ha ha ha ha ha ha. You gotta be kidding me. That's old news. Who gives a crap about the smea president and your redundant dribble? That’s small potatoes.

MOLE FAN

I stand behind the Mole, the administration is so curupt and has a long arm, the people in the union cannot speak up because we would be fired, harrased, and not able to work. Anyone listening should hear this, we as Union members have no say. The Union President works for the Administration, for them to get their way, not for the Union members. How currupt is this?????

wakeup

Grand Total - You didn't even point out that the core of what Julie posted above are studies from 21 and 26 YEARS ago! Even Rush Limbaugh would agree that the 'drive by liberal media' of today isn't as liberal as the media was in 19-f'n-80.
Julie then goes on to tell me that most of the media voted for Humphrey in '68. Sweet Jesus H. Mohammed J. Vishnu that's history. I've got a picture of myself at a Humphrey rally. I was so young I could barely walk. These days I'm so old I can barely walk. Why don't you tell us about how the liberal press was against Lincoln.

And Total, you're very correct when you say that the conservative bent in today's media is due to who owns the media not who reads the newscast. In the news room ownership is the ultimate editor.

Union Member

Are there any union members reading? Do we have any say? What is going on? Why do not we have a say? We have to stand together, we pay the union money out of our check every week. Wake up people. We are getting screwed.

Happy Member

Which union are you complaining about? Must be the police union. The union I belong to is not perfect but has certainly made great strides. We got huge raises with 3 or 4 retro checks without having to sacrifice anything. The last mayor gave us zero and lets not forget how she laid everyone off. Her people treated everyone like criminals. I hope for your sake you are talking about a union other than the smea. If you arent, you have some serious issues my friend.

Any tree huggers out there?

Anyone out there know what's going on with some of these maple trees around here. The leaves are all turning brown. Kind of early for that. Especially on Highland Ave. down near Davis and over on Broadway but maybe in other places around the city.

To: Any Tree Huggers Out There?

Just goes to show that this city is corrupt from the roots on up, the trees are just a reflection of that.

Call Boss Hog and and see if you can get any answers. That would be his department.

They used to have an aggressive tree pruning program and people that would specifically look after the trees in this city ( a tree doctor if you would) but he was probably replaced to make room for a couple of lacky's and "secretary's".
