Unions suck, but they're right this time

I am so sick of frigging unions. Mainly, I find they act as a barrier to accomplishing important goals -- I blame unions for the incredibly rising prices of various american products and I also blame them for the decreasing quality of HBO television shows like The Sopranos and Deadwood. But in this case, Leutcher is right, Mayor Joe seems to be attempting to strongarm them into accepting the reorg. This doesn't make him any different than any other pol of course but think about the 7 guys who are being denied an adavnce in their career. And I don't know about you but I already think SPD is understaffed -- more cops off the street is a bad thing, no matter how city hall spins it.

Leutcher is wrong

Screw that! Mayor Joe is just trying to straighten out the puddle of dysfunction and inefficiency that is the SPD. Of course as he does so, he's going to get a few naysayers who want to throw bombs (and its no surprise they're coming from the union) but Joe is not doing as bad as this web log may have you believe. An aside to The Mole, what kind of pathetic human being takes out his anger and frusteration anonymously on a frigging blog. If you have a problem with how Joe is running the city, why don't you sign your name to your accusations? Becuz you're not a real man, that's why!!!!!

To: Leutcher is wrong, "He who Cast Stones", I guess the same reason why I cannot send you an email to the addy you chose to list. The postman returned it as "Looser".....

Now that is unique...

Willard

The best know rat species are the WILLARD rats. This particular RAT is known as the Somerville rat or true rat, originated in the Somerville Police Department. This particular RAT is best know for his time spent kissing ASS on the second floor of the Somerville Police Department. This rat possesses various attributes ranging from dropping dimes on countless members of the police department along with using flattering words that hide his desire to control you. Most importantly he pretends to support you while he intends to destroy you. His soft spoken approach hides his destructive approach. This particular RAT is known for misleading people by omitting key facts when attempting to accomplish his goal. He casts his behavior as reasonable and constructive, while making sure he points out others behavior has unreasonable and destructive.

Stay Tuned

WillardLoser

Willard, you keep using the term RAT. Rat where? At the Police Dept.??? Cops are supposed to be, and PAID to be.......HONEST. Uphold the LAW. Be respectable. You know....STAND UP kinda people. People you can count on to wear that sheild and be the best person they can possibly be. That's what we as taxpayers expect from the sworn law-enforcement officers that our tax dollars pay. And well over 100k apiece I might add. So if someone is a RAT, that implies that they opened their mouth and told on someone who wasn't being the HONEST, LAW-UPHOLDING, SILVER SHIELD WEARING, MODEL-CITIZEN that we are paying them HUGE money to be. If there's a RAT in the SPD, he/she isn't the problem, the CROOKED,Whinebag Cop that they outted is. Let's get rid of ALL of them. Starting with Leutcher. He's lucky he can still walk never mind drive a cruiser. Ask him how much money he's made on details this year. You'd be puking if he answered you. Talk about in it for himself. But like I said, there's no RATS if there's no CRIME.
Think about it.

JoeTaxpayer

What!!!??? How dare the Mayor make the cops accountable!?!?!?!?! After all, they are the most important and powerful people in this city. How dare he!!! Joe is bad. He wants people that are on the city payroll to be accountable! vote his arse out! I can't believe he is trying to do this in Somerville! Who the HELL does he think he is? The taxpayers don't want accountability. We like getting screwed, we're used to it! Stop doing the right thing Joe!! Let the two traffic units sit at Dunkin Donuts every morning between 9 and 10am at Assembly Square talking about how much you suck as they are making mega bucks eating breakfast sandwiches. Or the guy who sleeps in his cruiser at Home Depot parking lot. That's what we want as taxpayers! We don't need more cops on the street, we need the cops that are there to do their jobs!

WeThePeople

Leutcher... you promulgates I...
With their 100,000 salaries as everyone saw in the news... it is people like him ... like the cops that sleep behind Twin City Mall under the overpass ... where are their Sergeants ... are they inspecting what they expect or don't expect!!!

Wake up people It is Leutcher's kind that are holding people in Somerville hostage ...the only thing longer than the Iran Troop Hostage Crisis is The Leutcher Hostage Crisis!!!

No Cop here

I am shock to read the mayor is taking the cops off the street. in my ward 3 i have never seen a cop walking the beat in a long time. i have never seen a cop walking the beat. so wake up a smell the coffee. opps i should say that because you might see all the cops at dunkin donuts.

Ward2

Yes when we call them, they often don't show up. Unless there is murder or something.

There are a lot of hard working people looking for jobs that would work for half of what these overweight slobs are being paid!

oh my god

we do not need police just keep on giving jobs to the family and friends of stan and alderman from ward 1111,222,3,4,55555,6,7777 and of course mayor joey ! we all care about the tax payers b.s ! cc:howie carr @boston herald .com

Ward2 Reports

there has been a higher than average amount of brake-ins around Dickinson st in Inman square over the past few weeks. Three houses on Springfield Street (the end closer to Cambridge St) and few on Concord Ave., at least two that we know of, car windows were smashed in on Saturday night. One car was parked in front of 20 Dickinson St. There was also a few cars’ on Springfield St that had their windows broken over the past week as well. A motorcycle was stolen out of a back yard on Dickinson St over the weekend. And in addition to their usual disturbances patrons of the Abbey lounge have been spotted smoking what looks and definetly smells like pot pipes out back as well as in cars parked on Dickinson street. By the time cops arrive the people are done smoking and have left the scene.

Solh Zendeh

Hey Ward 2 Reports, where are you getting those stats? Is there a police blotter online somewhere? I've been poking around for one with no luck... thanks!

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

Ward 2,

Now now dear. Don't be getting all mellow-dramatic. I personally spoke to your ward Alderperson and she assures me that everything is absolutely fine in your district. The quality of life is the best it will ever be she assured me.

But then again, the other six Alderpersons told me the same thing.

Seems as though we live in a perfect City.

I'm so glad to hear that.

In Disbelief,

Dr. Mrs. McCarthy

This Jack Leutcher doesn't seem like the brightest bulb and he certainly lacks tact, but you don't have to be a brain surgeon to realize that the more police and firemen that you have available the safer the city will be. If you look at the past two mayors (Curtatone and Kelly Gay) you will see a tremendous drop in the numbers of both professions.
The main question remains: Is the community safer now than in years past? Sadly, the answer is no. Kelly Gay paid for it with her job. It remains to be seen whether Curtatone will also be held accountable.

old souled democrat somerville guy

I think the more we hold our mayor accountable or give them the credit, whatever the case may be, the less effective we all are for creating the change we need. We all need to get more involved. We need more Davis square task forces, we need more watchdog groups but we need everyone working together. Right now, the strongest leader anywhere can not do what we need our mayor to do -- Stop the backlashes and get things done.-- Every time the comic book aldermen and mayor try to do something, they get backlashed from some union or some business group scared of the damn "socialists" or scared of the renters in Davis square. "Don't raise the meters because our waiters can't afford to parking". And this from the same assholes that kick you out of the restaurant to turn the tables faster or tell you can't just buy an appetizer for your main course. Well you know what? Get the F&**# out of our community then.

We need a longer, stronger, vision for our city. And we need a leader that won't cave in to the crap. You know what else-- put the tickets on the car before the snow storm, if it doesn't snow than the tickets don't count. But don't be afraid to do it! It is time for the Rat breeding business to pay the exterminator bill, the city can' afford it. Lets take our kid gloves off and Fine the dirty crooks. You don't want pay a higher dumpster fee for the privilege of having a license to run your business our community? Ok then, you can only throw out the same amount as a regular family or home and then you have to haul the rest off yourself or pay a private company to come and get it.

A license to do business in Somerville is not a free get our of jail card. It is a priveledge that should be earned and re-earned. To often businesses think they can park their used cars anywhere they want or breed as many rats as they like becuase they dont know how to clean up and then expect the city to foot the bill. When this happens, lets take their licenses away. There are plenty of good business people who be honored to serve the community. Lets start giving the good guys an advantage.

Outsider

I don't know Somerville, so I'll just make a general comment: I've lived in places where the cops are, if not understaffed, definitely kept on their toes, and they've usually been the best in terms of both rapport with their civilians and keeping the streets safe. Conversely, some of the quietest places I've lived have had some of the worst cops, in terms of both corruption, attitude, and sheer incompetence. The extreme example would be one small town in rural North Carolina, where every night several cops with nothing else to do would stand around outside the one convenience store and make audible comments about the young women that passed by them, in-between making illegal stops for quotas and crap-shoot searches for drugs or DUIs, or just to remind themselves they were police officers, at least in theory. My point is that any community is like an ecosystem, and adding as many watchdogs to as you can afford isn't necessarily going to solve the predator problem without creating another.
