No surprise.

ward of morons

wow what a total non-surprise there..pero's a piece of crap and if you think this is the first time hes done stuff like this think again. what are the people of ward 4 thinking having dumb and dumbererer as their aldermoron and school dipshit as their voices on those two boards......i bet you longtime bloggers can remember when this paper was hammering pero every issue about being a dumbass and his antics in the race to get "his seat" back from jim mccallum and then i heard he had his mommy call the paper and ask them to stop picking on lets recap: hes a dumbass, a hack, a liar, puts personal grudges and personal politics ahead of what his constituents want and hes a mommas boy. nice work ward 4, hes starting to make the intellectually vacant harris look like a rhodes scholar

Inman Square and Ward 2 need help

In Inman square many patrons of Abbey lounge and have taken to the street, annoying neighbors with noise, litter and clouds of smoke. Residents near Inman are forced to walk down Beacon Street next to the abbey lounge, where crowds of smokers sandwich you to the curb. "It's annoying because there's just tons of people out and you can't get through the sidewalk if you are walking with children in strollers and dogs, and it's loud," "There's like cigarette butts everywhere - it's a mess."

Businesses that serve the interests of customers and patrons outside of the community are more likely to cause problems for neighbors. The Abbey is now having more and more loud bands play there. It is no longer a quiet neighborhood bar that serves locals. They attract crowds that come to hear the bands. The crowds bring noise and other related issues into the community. Drunken patrons, fights, vehicle traffic and on our street has no doubt contributed to the environment that caused break-ins and damaged to our parked cars.

The establishment is hosting louder rock bands more often, 6 days a week instead of just weekends. People linger outside after they smoke, and others walk around to talk on their cell phones. When loud bands are playing inside the music can be heard in the street and in neighbor’s houses. The patrons on their cell phones look for quieter places to talk and are seen walking up and down the neighbor’s driveways or out back into the neighborhood to avoid the noise from the bar. This just serves to bring the disturbances further into our communities and homes.

The problems will get worse through the summer, the bar will be overly hot and people will flock outside through the front and back doors allowing the noise to waft through neighbors open windows nearby. Non-smokers say they welcome the smoking ban when they walk into a bar now - but hate the outdoor result. "It dirties up the streets of Somerville" Try walking down Beacon Street by the Abbey lounge when the sidewalk is lined with smokers between sets, it is not fun.

The Abbey lounge is located in a neighborhood zone unlike most of Somerville’s drinking establishments which exist in the heart of squares zoned for commercial and business use. The back of the bar is often cluttered with garbage that blows into the neighborhood. In the warmer weather the smells from the dumpster’s blows into our houses and yards. In addition to the smell and garbage littered on the street, neighbors deal with noise from patrons driving in boom cars, hot-rods, motorcycles at all hours the bar is open. They park in our street and force us to park our vehicles unsafely out of site of our own home.

Pero is a bum

Walter Pero should be ashamed of himself!

Walter "The Momma's Boy" Pero is at it again

This disgusts me -- you should be ashamed of yourself -- allowing petty political differences to get in the way of honoring a nationally recognized war hero -- what could you possibly say to justify this???

Mrs. Pero

Walter, this is your mother speaking...You are being a very bad boy nice and leave that man alone he did after all fight for democracy so you could act like a self serving ass...that doesn't sound like my wittle come over here and bend over momma's knee for a spanking...don't worry, after you can have some milk.

Mrs. Pero

Ron Newman

the Abbey Lounge is in ward 2, not ward 4, so I don't know why you posted this here.

Inman Square and Ward 2 need help

thanks, I actually meant to post under a more relevant article and thought I had, only realizing after I hit the post button.

Seeing your long list of greviances regarding the Abbey I've got two words. Shut UP. The patrons park on the street. Oh boo hoo. You mean in the metered spaces on Beacon? They're fair game. If they're parking in residential spaces without stickers they're getting ticketed (or at least should be - the city loves to ticket in and around Inman so I'm betting those who park illegally are paying the price) The Abbey is in a neighborhood zone? The Abbey is a half a block from the center of Inman Sq. With other businesses on each side of it. Neighborhood zone? Is there really even such a thing as a "neighborhood zone". Perhaps I should read up on our zoning before I say this, but I think you're trying to say the spot is zoned residential. Problem with that logic is it is not zoned residential and hasn't been exclusively residential ever. You go on and on about the smokers out front. First the City and then the State parked those smokers out front with their legislative actions. Take it up with the Pols. I think you've got a legitimate claim if they're not properly disposing of their garbage and it's blowing around your area. Take it up with the management. I'm sure they'd rather do something about it than get heat (and fines) from the City.

I'm so damn tired of the fun killing attitude so many in Somerville have. God forbid anyone live their life in a fashion that differs from your (and my) home by 8 in bed by 11 way. It's people like you that made sure the Store 24 in Davis is actually Store 18. Wouldn't want to have someone be able to get a frozen burrito and a pack of smokes at 3 in the morning. That would just lead to anarachy. Admit it, you live way down Dimick or all the way over by Lincoln Park. None of this is at your doorstep. You just hate the fact that those "hot rodders" are in YOUR Somerville.

The crowd outside the Abby Lounge now seems a lot better to me than it did before they had live music. Back then my SO lived directly across the street. There were drunken fights outside all the time. Once it was 10 or 11 o'clock in the morning and we were going to my car when a drunk stumbled out of the Abby and started throwing up right next to my car. At night coming home drunks would come up to my car and bang on the windows.

Live music did not make this situation worse than it was. You live in a city. You live in a busy and active square that is part of two cities. If you want peace and quiet don't live in a busy city square. The music is not the problem. True the old drunks from before didn't have cell phones and the musicgoers do have cell phones, but its not against the law to talk on your cell phone while walking down a city street.

If you want to live in a quiet suburban neighborhood move. You live in a CITY!!! Its noisy! Just deal with it.

Inman Square and Ward 2 need help

There is a house directly to the right of the Abbey lounge and another house directly behind it. And there is house kitty corner as well. Except for Dickinson Street,(which is a road) all of the "abutters" are homes. All of these homes abut other homes and roads. If you look at the Somerville zoning map here you can see it is actually a residential zone class RC.

Any time that a band is playing I can hear, at a minimum, the drums and feel the vibrations in my house. When their back doors are open everything is much much louder and I would have to do things like increase the volume of my own TV to the point that it might disturb my neighbors. If you can imangine one of those loud boom cars that pulls up to you at intersection parked in your back yard or next to your house you would have a very good idea about what I am hearing. This is with my windows shut. I have a hammock on my back porch that I would like to enjoy napping or reading on. In the summer, I would like to be able to open my own windows, but I can't. If I had loud parties and my friends caused this much noise in your neighborhood I would be arrested.

The Somerville definition for the residential zone that I live in is:
6.1.3. RC - Residence Districts.
Purpose. To establish and preserve a district for multi-family residential and other compatible uses which are of particular use and convenience to the residents of the district.

Now there are zones which might be more appropriate for an establishment licensed to serve alcohol and host live music to large crowds at night. you can find the other zones here

All of these zones seem much more suitable, some much more than others still:
NB - Neighborhood Business Districts

CBD - Central Business Districts

BA - Commercial Districts

BB- Commercial Residential Districts

Inman Square

You can find the zoning at the Somerville city website. As well as Somervilles sound ordinance. The State sound ordinance can be found by google-ing the phrase : "Regulation 310 CMR 7.10 : Noise"

I hate morons that stir up shit with honoring U.S. Vets!

Is this jerk at his shit again? I say he's got some mental issues! He's worst than a frigin flag burner for crying out loud! Please keep his name of any conversations! Just the mention of this assholes name makes my skin crawl! The guy would make a better old lady than an alderman!!!!!!

It *is* funny

So, does anyone care to enlighten? Why all the haters about Pero? He doesn't seem like a bad guy to me -- former teacher, cancer survivor, Veteran. Is there a back story that the rest of us should know?

"intellectually vacant harris look like a rhodes scholar".........rhodes scholar....well that statement just made me spit my coffee all over the monitor. thanks for the laugh...harris...rhodes scholar.....blahahahahahaa.......more like teresa cardosos puppet

Walter Pero deserves some respect

Walter Pero is a longtime turd of Somerville, a former a$$wipe in the United States Army and currently serves as head $hithead on the Board of Aldermen. Show him some respect!

Viet vet

I am ashamed to be associate with a city that would elect a guy like Walter Pero. As a veteran that actually saw action I find this guy to be a total fraud. He puts on this big act of caring about veterans and how he served in the military. He is a big phony! While i was in southeast asia he was running the kitchen on some base in Germany.

He has spent his life collecting a pay check from one government job after another. I can't believe he still wants more!

Pero has a poor attitude

Walter has a poor attitude. His actions shouldn't be suprising to anyone. He should be ashamed of himself. Walter surrounds himself with the haters.

Veteran 2006

Hey Alderman Pero
Wake up and smell the coffee. everyone welcomed you back and sent you back to politics. Alderman Pero we should be proud of mr. kelly on what he accomplished. So if you run for re-election next year Pero watch out..

Ward 4

Another reason why Alderman Pero has to go: [from the Farm Team]:

Uh, alderman? Most of life is showing up
Thursday, May 25, 2006

Aldermen called for acting Police Chief Robert Bradley to explain rising crime trends in Somerville Tuesday, but then they didn't show up to hear him speak.

"I think we've been stood up," said Alderman at Large Denise Provost at City Hall Tuesday, when she was the only member of the board's Public Health and Public Safety Committee to show up for a meeting with the chief.

Bradley and Mayor Joe Curtatone showed up for the meeting, along with Ward 3 Aldermen Tom Taylor. But after a half-hour, Provost called the meeting off because Alderman at Large Dennis Sullivan and Ward 4 Aldermen Walter Pero didn't show up.

The committee must have at least two of its three members to form a quorum and hold a legal meeting. Taylor is not a member of the Public Health and Public Safety Committee.

Provost and Alderman at Large Bill White had asked Bradley to appear before the committee to discuss his plan to tackle a 47 percent increase in violent crimes and 15 percent increase in property crimes in Somerville.

White didn't show up, either.

Bradley, Provost, Curtatone, Taylor and Aldermen Clerk Bob McWaters all made small talk for a half-hour while they waited for the committee members to show.

Provost said she will attempt to reschedule the meeting.

James Norton

Ward 4 -

I would normally not like the cut and paste from that crappy ass paper (ooops thinking out loud again), but anything that helps teach people (specifically voters in Ward 4) that this guy has got to be the worst elected official this city has EVER seen I am ALL for - and there's plenty of them!

Normally someone sucks when they hold public office because they're either stupid or ignorant - not both - and there's so much more to share too.

Maybe some other time.

Ward 4

I agree that Pero should go; however, he has not had any serious challenger in many years. Who, in Ward 4, could challenge Pero and win?

James Norton

Ward 4 -

Anyone with an IQ higher than a lawn dart could beat him, don't kid yourself. And hey I know I'm going to get some crap for this, because I live here too, but its the voters of Ward 4 who are to really blame for putting his sorry ass back in office.

Don't even think about suggesting I could run for that office, either. I'm running for my life, not Ward 4 Alderman. I''m very happy staying under the radar, so to speak.

If I ever thought about going into politics again, I would probably only consider running for Register of Deeds when Gene Brune doesn't want it anymore - and ONLY then. In all honesty, that's a real hypothetical situation - the sun and the moon and the stars would all have to align just right for that to even remotely happen. For now I'm good working with my family and trying to eek out a living.

You want to know who I would love to see run against Pero? How about Steve Glines? He lives in Ward 4, has tons of personality, he's intelligent as hell and a nice, honest guy. In fact - thats IT!

Remember, like every other bit of local news, you heard it here FIRST.

he has a point

i like how JN writes, but i dont always agree with what he says. today is different. i dont live in his ward, but it doesnt take a genius to figure out the alderman and the school committee person from ward four are both brain dead. glines would be just what that ward needs. sure he got trounced in the at large race but who cares? i bet he would be a great alderman and certainly better than pero, any day of the week.

Eamon O'Rielly

As a fairly new resident of Somerville and Ward 4 but not registered yet, I will be voting against Pero. Lucy Lipshitz would be a better candidate, lets talk her into running, she lives in the projects, or is it Browning Road, I get the two of them mixed up don't you?

alderman pero should be dismissed as a member of our city goverment. mr pero put his personal feelings above the respect he should have shown for a hero of the vietnam war. mr pero, only 106 men in the entire country are still alive that have been awarded the medal of honor and i'm sorry you did not get the job you wanted, but i now see why. I would love to hear your war history.

The Pero Memoirs!

Walter Pero's war history Memoirs:

Began as a girl scout

Moved on to a Rainbow girl

Became a SHS cheerleader

Enlisted into the Wax

Took on the hard role as a desk clerk

the only battle he saw was over some new pant hose

Retired from military and applied to Little Sisters of the Poor for a job

Application got refused by Mrs. Sister McCarthy and got booted out

Ran for an elected office in Somerville

Won by mistake with endorsements from radicals that originally came from Cambridge

NOW sits on the Board of Alderman as "The Biggest Sponge & Piece of Crap that there is", AKA Mommy's Boy!

Welome to Wally's World!

Life in Somerville

I couldn't resist sharing this with you! Walter Pero is played by the Grasshopper!

by Snowflake!

The Ant & The Grasshopper

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer
long, building his house and laying up supplies for
the winter.

The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and
dances and plays the! Summer a way Come winter, the
ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies
out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer
long at the DPW, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and
dances and plays the summer away & not signing any citations for anyone at all!

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press
conference and demands to know why the ant should be
allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold
and starving and allowed to read this Blog on an hourly basis.

CBS, NBC, The Somervlle News, The Farm Team, The Cambridgville News, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide
pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video
of the ant in his comfortable home with a table
filled with food .

America is stunned by the sharp contrast with Life in Somerville. How can
this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor
grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears with Ron The Newmanator as his date on Oprah with the
grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy" by Stan Koty.

Jesse Jackson and Joe Curtatone stages a demonstration in front of the
ant's house where the news stations film the group
singing, "We shall overcome"

Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God
for the grasshopper's sake and The missing $31,000. to be found!

Nancy Pelosi, Dotty Gay & John Kerry exclaim in an interview
with Larry King ,James Norton and Mrs. Sister McCarthy that the ant has gotten rich off the back
of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate
tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair share."

Finally, the EEOC, ERA & Somerville Board of Alderman less Pero's vote, drafts the "Economic Equity and
Anti-Grasshopper Act," retroactive to the beginning
of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a
proportionate number of green bugs and, having
nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is
confiscated by the government and his car is towed to Pat's Towing then later modified and revamped into a street Sweeper for the city.

Hillary gets her old law firm to hire Bill White and Maria Curtatone to represent the
grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant,
and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges
that Bill "no pants" Clinton appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients.

The ant loses the case and Mike Foley Moves into play. Mike gets his old job back at Inspectional Services and places a stop work order on the property, smiles and says "Im Back!".

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing
up the last bits of the ant's food while the government
house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's
old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't
maintain it. The ant has disappeared in the snow. The
grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident
and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a
gang of spiders bearing the name MS13 on thier vests who terrorize the once peaceful

MORAL OF THE STORY: Vote Republican and Dont Re-Elect Walter Pero the next time around! Vote Blank is better!!!

Somerville Condo Owners Association

Reform. Reform. Reform. Everyone loves it. The question is, how do you put it in to place? And are you willing to take actions to help make it happen? Are you willing to go to bat for a candidate who is putting himself on the line?

In the end, we need good candidates to run for office. We need officials who are going to fight against a status quo that is not good enough. And, we all need to put our money (proverbial and real) where our mouths are, and make sure that when candidates who will fight for the change we need in Somerville are running for office, we support them.

We are some of Somerville's newest members and we have some solutions to your problems that you may be interested in hearing. Our philosophy is neither Republican nor Democratic but encompasses the best of both to help protect all of our local interests. As you all know a particular party’s politics can leave your town sinking in the murk while they start antics like pushing national and state agendas. They spend their local salaries on trading local concessions like giving up T stops to pass a statewide bill on seatbelts or something. What is best for the party is not always in the best interest of the City and its Residents. Salaries paid to local officials are way too high. This money can be better directed to paying the city employees, the people who actually provide the services that our city needs more of.

We can make City Services much more efficient. You don’t have to be a Police officer for 25 years to honestly say the local media has failed to realize the true nature and depth of the morale problem within the Somerville Police Department.
Rank-and-file members are a dedicated breed of people who can adapt, improvise and overcome any obstacles -- even obstacles from within their own department.
Little changes like the ones that are being suggested do not in themselves cause this low morale problem, nor does the low, non-competitive wages police are paid. Rather it is a combination of poor leadership and a lack of trust and appreciation that eats away at the officers. An administration and culture of cronyism, nepotism, and blatantly unfairness causes this.
Why don’t we anonymously survey the police and city workers? No doubt a survey would show that police officers feel their current leadership is lacking in communication skills, fairness and support, most of the police officers would say they are dissatisfied with this leadership.
Different neighborhoods have different needs, and our plan would aim to address that. While car theft may be the biggest crime in one neighborhood, guns or noise may be in another. A cookie cutter, wait and see approach does not work... in areas where People don't come forward in gun cases? What if they knew, and trusted the police that answered to their neighborhood? Solid plans do not come from pie-in-the sky theory, but from real experience with success. For instance, many of our 401ks have earned 20% to 30% in last few years. How much money has the cities retirement plan earned for civic employees. I bet it is not invested wisely and for the purpose of earning money at the highest rate and lowest risk. That is ashamed because it is money that good people are going to need to have the life and retirement they deserve. We can change that. How about some consultants that are focused on keeping what we have and making it better as apposed to recommendations of layoffs and cutbacks so that our spineless leaders can ride the fence.

This is where it all hits the fan. This is where if you are invested in Somerville, and care about Somerville, you have a chance to act on it. This is where you have a chance to be part of the solution. We also like to encourage freedom from prejudice, cronyism, and nepotism when distributing social services, pay, and opportunity to city workers. This is so much needed by everyone here especially minorities who have historically been repressed even in a socially fun town like Somerville.

There is a lot we can change. And we can make it look easy because it is.

Somerville Condo Owners Association

Following are some of the major forms of corruption in the civil service of Somerville:

1) Uses of public office for private gain.

2) Nepotism in hiring and promotion of public employees.

3) Nepotism in awarding government tenders.

4) Discrimination in providing quality services.

Somerville humor

Mayor Curtatone and Stan Koty were sitting at a bar having a drink. A guy walked in and asked the bartender "Isn’t that Mayor Joe and Koty sitting over there?"
The bartender replied "Yep, that’s them."
So the guy walks over and says "Wow, this is a real honor. What are you guys doing in here?"
Curtatone replied "we’re planning World War III."
And the guy said "Really, what’s going to happen?"
Curtatone said "Well, we’re going to kill 2 million Al Qaeda terrorists and one bicycle repairman."
The guy exclaimed "A bicycle repairman? Why kill a bicycle repairman?"
Curtatone turned to Koty, punched him on the shoulder and said "See smart ass? I told you no one would worry about the 2 million Al Qaeda."

The Mole

To Somerville Condo Owners Association... your number # statement, "Uses of public office for private gain" wouldn't be associated with the Mayors backing out of his personal loan for his leased vehicle, Volvo, last year would it? I know he sat in the office of the leasing Manager at Sentry Ford in Medford and begged to get out without penalty, of his loan. He did so without any additional monies. he has several months left of the leased vehicle too.

Would you or I be treated in the same manner if we requested that favor? I think not. i would classify the #1 item on your list as just that. "Use of Public Office for private gain."

Joey Daytona

Hey, Walter is going to be a guest on my live call-in show on SCAT Channel 3 Monday Nov. 20th from 8-8:30pm. Maybe some of you would like to call and ask him a question?
