The Somerville Committee For A Response to AIDS, which is New England’s third oldest AIDS organization, has announced two upcoming events. Their 20th fund raiser, “A Night to Care” will be held at the Mt. Vernon Restaurant on Tuesday, August 17th from 5-8 p.m. with a buffet and silent auction. Tickets are only $35 for this very important cause. Sponsorships are also available starting at $150. Call 617-666-4130 to offer help, items for the silent auction, or to order tickets to the event.
The CRA is also sponsoring “Somerville Night at The Lion King” on Tuesday, December 7th, 2005 at the spanking new Opera House on Tremont Street. Speaking of fine people, Gold Star Mother Anne Norman recently fell and broke her wrist and hip—she is also recovering. Send cards, etc. to her home at 27 Winslow Avenue, Somerville, Ma. 02144 and her wonderful daughter Maureen will make sure they get to our favorite Gold Star lady. Love ya Anne!
Rumors abound that five Congressman are looking to run for President Kerry’s US Senate seat if he wins the Presidency. Not C’man Mike Capuano. Mike isn’t saying much, but his friends are urging him to consider running for Governor. The foreboding Mitt Romney isn’t making many friends as he worries more about a national run for office than he does about the state he supposedly serves. Go for it Mike! Barbara would be a great First Lady of the Commonwealth.
SHS former Headmaster Tony Fedele is back in Somerville—he recently purchased a beautiful condo on Shore Drive. We have heard that the always dapper and single professional might just decide to run for School Committee in his ward. Tony would be a most qualified candidate. Show them what you’ve got Tony!
Maybe there will actually be a few opponents to those who have held office in this city for so long. John Sapochetti , famous Supreme Kitchen chef, is said to be eyeing a run for School Committee in 2005. John is a lifelong Somerville native and well liked by all who know him. Burn ‘em out, John!
Mark Horan may be one of the nice guys at City Hall, but our secret sources keep telling us that he should be a one man department—it seems as though he is unable to be a boss, and too often his staff is ready to kill him. Why not separate the communications department from the press job and make everybody happier? While we are talking about City Hall—why is it that they call Janice DeLorey the ‘dark lady’ of City Hall? There must be a reason—because we have heard it more than once.
The dreaded DNC will be in full swing soon. It looks like it really is going to be a nightmare around here and we heard anyone who doesn’t have to be around is heading for the hills, the lakes and the Cape. Good luck to those who are sticking around.
Our own Peter Yezukevich, who does the Editorial Cartoons and Comedy Section of the paper got married this past Saturday. Peter and his lovely new bride Beth are currently on their honeymoon in Aruba. Peter was the first new writer for our paper when the new owners took over and is well liked by everyone. We all wish Peter and Beth a long, happy and prosperous life together.
Speaking of local weddings, Kim Foster—Herbie (Butch) and Diane Foster’s daughter—is getting married this coming weekend at their summer residence in Falmouth. A huge crowd of Somerville notables and their own family will be on hand for the wedding. We also wish Kim and Tim a long, happy and prosperous life together as well. The Falmouth Inn on Main Street is booked solid with all sorts of Somerville friends and family attending, so a good time should be had by all.
Senator Charlie Shannon will be having his Annual Boston Harbor Cruise on August 18th. Every year the well known and very popular Senator has a sell out crowd on board. If you’re interested in going, call his office for tickets before they’re all sold out.
Have you seen the new scooter craze hitting the city streets lately with the kids driving up and down all the streets with the high noise level? First of all, what idiot parent is buying these kids things like this and allowing them to be on city streets? Hopefully the Board of Alderman will pass some kind of ordinance taking them off the streets or at least putting restrictions on them.
Hold your breath and keep your fingers crossed—the Assembly Square project’s new renovation of the existing Mall building will start soon. We just hope that wacko group of selfcentered activists associated with the Mystic “My View” Task Force don’t decide to file another one of their silly lawsuits. They’re still holding up some of the progress down there at this time. We are still trying to find out where they get their monies to support their efforts. We have heard that some of the money trail leads to outside the city sources—who knows, maybe we’ll find out sometime soon.
We see the out-of-towner Board of Health member Doctor Osler is still there—representing his boss—the Cambridge Health Alliance. Come on Mayor Joe—there must be some local resident who is also a doctor that can take his place and not be affiliated with the City of Cambridge. We are counting the days and the meetings until he is sent packing back to Cambridge.
I would be interested in exchanging messages with Bob Publicover, of Somerville, who is also certainly a descendant of an illiterate German farmer who settled in Nova Scotia in 1752.
My wife and I may be visting Mass this summer to attend a concert and to visit other relatives.
Perhaps we could meet for a drink.
