The Middle East in Cambridge features Dave Crespo time and time again. This time one of his many ongoing musical projects, Atlantic/Electric played there to promote their demo release. To add gravitas to an already luxurious debut, Dave has a radio show and two other bands.
The other bands he is in are The Yer Mom's and his personal pursuit Dave Crespo’s Afterparty. Each project possesses its own virtue, and as a result the locale must measure up—which the Middle East no doubt does. “It takes a lot of preparation. Every time we play at the Middle East, it takes a lot of promotion”, says Dave. He had some hesitation about outright praising the turnout during last Tuesday’s show but he does admit that playing a Tuesday holds a wild card chance of missing a head or two, “I’ve played at the Middle East a lot. It was the first time in a long time that we didn’t sell out”.
In respect to the arrangement and composition of Atlantic/Electric Crespo mentions some history within the band’s inner circle of being comparisons to the Pixies; due to the tone the lead singer Anthony Fariole reaches . “There’s aren't too bands these days that don’t feed off what the Pixies did”, says Dave. Crespo knows the local rock scene reasonably well, he’s a promoter in addition to a musician, and he hosts an Internet Radio program, the Boston Local Music Show.
Here are insights into three separate tracks of their discography. As much as it sounds like a political outcry, “Skyscraper shake down” is nothing of the sort and exists mainly as a commentary on city living- its density, nonethelless they achieve palpable density with skyscraper. The song “Illumination City” is ska-inspired. Finally “Bigger than you” goes further back than the Pixies in regards to its comparison. The composition is a hallmark of the early 60s bubblegum pop, which is a concept totally separate from the band, but here they have gone and rediscovered it—Monkees in the flesh. Check out the Middle East on June 18 for Dave’s other band The Yer Mom's.
