9-Year-Old Cambridge Resident Credited with Saving Mother’s Life

Girl and 9-1-1 dispatcher who helped her to be honored as Local 9-1-1 Heroes

On January 25, 2012, 9-year-old Priscilla Tsagli of Cambridge called 9-1-1 when her mother accidentally swallowed a large calcium gel cap which lodged in her throat, partially obstructing her air supply, and causing a life-threatening situation.

City of Cambridge Affordable Housing Programs Upcoming Information Sessions

 

 

The Housing Division of the City of Cambridge Community Development Department will be holding a series of Walk-In Informational Sessions on the city’s affordable rental and homeownership programs. The next session is scheduled for Monday, March 19, from 6-8 p.m., at the Corcoran Park Community Room, 1 Corcoran Lane, Cambridge. Additional sessions will be announced soon and will be held at different locations throughout the City of Cambridge. For more information, call 617-349-4622.

Senator Sal DiDomenico recently sponsored the annual Massachusetts Department of Mental Health Metro Boston Area Citizen's Legislative Breakfast in the Great Hall at the State House, where he was recognized for his legislative leadership on behalf of adults and children with mental illness and their families.   The event provided an opportunity for people with mental illness, family members, providers and advocates to interact with state legislators.

International Mother Language Day Celebrated February 18 by BANE

Bangladesh Association of New England, a very prominent non-profit and Cultural Organization of the USA, thoughtfully organized Program on the February 18 at Kennedy Longfellow School , Cambridge.
Mr. Shaheedul Islam Prince, president of the said organization chaired over the meeting, Consular General of Bangladesh, NY was the chief guest; Mrs. Dennis Simmons , Councilor at Large , the City of Cambridge and  Dr. Sajed Kamal,  Prof. Brandies University were special guests. There was a cultural show and children drama staged directed by BANE Cultural Secretary Sattar Pearo and Ms. Tamanna Karim. BANE is also inviting all to join Bangladesh Independence Day on March 31, from 5pm to 10pm at the Kennedy Longfellow School.

Cambridge Maintains Rare Distinction of Earning Three Triple A Ratings

Cambridge City Manager Robert W. Healy proudly announced that the City of Cambridge was one of 27 municipalities in the U.S. to earn three AAA ratings from the nation's three major credit rating agencies, Moody's Investors Service, Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings.  The city has attained this rare distinction every year since 1999.

According to sources, Vice President Joe Biden is coming to Cambridge on Thursday, February 23. The Vice President is said to be attending a fund raiser at a private Cambridge home. The estimated cost of admission is between $5000.-$10,000. for a ticket to attend and to have a photo opportunity with the vice president.

February 25 Open House to Enlighten, Educate, and Inform

 

Joining with Masonic lodges across the Commonwealth, Freemasons meeting in Somerville at 125 Highland Ave (rear building), will open their doors to the public on Saturday, February 25, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., as part of the 2012 Early Spring Open House, a state-wide celebration of Freemasonry. If you’ve ever wondered who the Freemasons are, whether they are the descendants of the Knights Templars, or what the inside of their building looks like, here’s your chance to find out.

 

More than 230 lodges will be hosting Open Houses to help the public gain a better understanding of what Freemasonry is, and the positive impact that is has on its members, their families, and community. Members will provide tours of their building, talk about Freemasonry’s history, discuss its rituals, signs, and symbols, and explain what they do.

City of Cambridge, Harvard and Homeowners Rehab Inc. Collaborate to Preserve Affordable Housing in Harvard Square

Twenty-five affordable apartments in Harvard Square’s Chapman Arms Apartments will remain affordable for at least 50 additional years after the City of Cambridge, Harvard University and the nonprofit Homeowners Rehab Inc. (HRI) put together a creative plan to preserve the affordability of these units through HRI’s purchase of the 50-unit Chapman Arms building.  The acquisition, the first under the Commonwealth’s new preservation statute, Chapter 40T, was celebrated at an event in Harvard Square yesterday.

Cambridge Police Department to Serve as Lead Agency on “Smart Policing Initiative”

 

Collaboration between Cambridge, Everett, and Somerville police departments will use predictive policing to prevent cross-jurisdictional violent crime.

The City of Cambridge was one of sixteen national sites awarded a competitive Smart Policing Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. This grant will enable the Cambridge, Everett, and Somerville police departments and their research partner, Justice & Security Strategies, Inc. to engage in an innovative approach – using predictive policing analytics – to prevent cross-jurisdictional violent crime.
