Commissioner Haas promotes state and local law enforcement’s role in community safety efforts
Washington, D.C. – Commissioner Robert C. Haas of the Cambridge Police Department was invited to the White House on Wednesday, where he provided insight on how the Administration’s recently-released Strategic Implementation Plan for Empowering Local Partners to Prevent Violent Extremism in the United States can be implemented locally. Commissioner Haas joined more than 35 senior and front line law enforcement officials in giving feedback, talking about how the federal government can best support efforts to implement the strategy in local communities. Participants also had the opportunity to inform officials like Attorney General Eric Holder and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano about their local needs and how the government can be most helpful, especially highlighting many of the activities occurring in their respective communities already.

In Recognition of Black History Month in February, the City of Cambridge Employees’ Committee on Diversity is sponsoring the exhibit Visions by Young Black Artists -- Celebrating Black History Past, Present and Future. The Opening Ceremony will be held Thursday, Feb. 2, from 6-7:30 p.m., at Cambridge City Hall, 795 Massachusetts Ave., and will feature keynote speaker Jemadari Kamara, Associate Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Senator Sal DiDomenico announced today that he has co-sponsored “An Act to reduce the property tax liability in exchange for volunteer service for veterans,” which would allow local veterans to volunteer in exchange for a reduction on their property taxes. This new program would be subject to local adoption and could allow a veteran to reduce their liability up to $750. Many cities and towns within our Commonwealth currently offer a tax work-off program for seniors, and this would expand the program to allow returning veterans to ease their property tax burdens.

The Council on Aging, with some assistance from the Office of Workforce Development (OWD), puts together a list of teens each winter who are interested in being hired to shovel snow for seniors or residents with disabilities who might otherwise have difficulty clearing snow from their property. Teens and residents negotiate the rate, with the resident making the payment directly to the teen. The COA helps to make the connection between the two.

Today is the second anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010. The Cambridge City Council has declared today to be a “Day of Remembrance and Dedication to Haiti.” In response, the Cambridge Peace Commission is asking all to observe a time of quiet remembrance, reflection, and rededication to those who lost their lives in Haiti, and to those still affected by the earthquake and subsequent humanitarian crisis.

Senator Sal DiDomenico has been awarded the “Legislator of the Year” by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Planning Association. The honor, which recognizes an elected official who has made a significant contribution to community planning, was given to Senator DiDomenico and Representative Linda Dorcena Forry for their work as chairs of the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Business and their support of the Community Preservation Act, a bill co-sponsored by both legislators.
