The 25th Annual City of Cambridge Five Mile CityRun and Three Mile CityWalk will be held Sunday, April 3. This very popular rite of spring has attracted over 1,200 runners and walkers over the past few years and has been named one of the top 75 road races in New England by the prestigious New England Runner magazine. With the added sponsorship these last few years of Marathon Sports, Saucony and Whole Foods, the event has raised approximately $20,000 in corporate donations and entry fees. Proceeds after expenses benefit the Friends of Cambridge Athletics (FOCA), the Andrea Harvey Memorial Fund and the Cambridge Program: Helping Turn Disabilities into Capabilities.

The Cambridge Police Department invites high school seniors in Cambridge who are entering college to participate in our High School Senior Essay Challenge.
The winner and runner up of this competition will be awarded a brand new laptop computer, courtesy of Micro Center, to assist them in their academic journey. The purpose of this contest is for students to examine the community in which they live and analyze how it relates to public safety.

Also at the ceremony, nine inmates who recently earned their General Education Diploma were recognized for their dedication to their education.

Members of the Cambridge Police Department joined representatives from other City agencies, local businesses, and universities at a meeting of the Cambridge Public Safety Association.
The meeting, the first of three CPSA meetings slated for 2011, was held at Genzyme world headquarters in Kendall Square on the morning of May 16th and focused on The Digital Workplace – New Media, Risks and Security.

Well, I guess since Somerville doesn’t have a Poet Laureate, Somerville poets have to go elsewhere, and indeed a number of them have been included in the innovative new poetry anthology “On the River” edited by the first Poet Populist of Cambridge Peter Payack. Saint Clement High School will be awarded the 2011 MIAA Division 4 Girls' Basketball Team Sportsmanship Award.
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has announced that Saint Clement High School will be awarded the 2011 MIAA Division 4 Girls’ Basketball Team Sportsmanship Award. The Lady Anchors were chosen from 61 Division IV schools across the state. “This achievement, not only the first of its kind in school history, but it is a true testament of what our sport programs are all about,” said Robert G. Chevrier, Principal, Saint Clement School. “I would like to congratulate Athletic Director and Girls Varsity Basketball coach Shawn Thornton for exemplifying the true meaning of sportsmanship not only in his coaching of the team but for all he does for the students of Saint Clement School,” said Bob.

In honor International Women’s Day on March 8th and Women’s History Month, the Cambridge Police Department would like to highlight the achievements of its first female police officer.
Edith J. Taylor was hired as an investigator in July of 1919 and become a full-time police officer in March of 1921. She spent 33 years as a Cambridge Police Officer.

The Cambridge Police Department hosted an Informational Open House for those interested in sitting for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Open Competitive Examination for Police Officers scheduled for April 30, 2011.
Nearly 30 people were in attendance for the meeting at the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility on Monday night, February 28th. Those in attendance were greeted by Commissioner Robert C. Haas of the Cambridge Police Department who said, “We are looking for people with the talent and integrity to serve this very diverse city and I am encouraged by the turnout here tonight. Ask questions, be prepared, and good luck to you all.”
