The 25th Annual City of Cambridge Five Mile CityRun and Three Mile CityWalk will be held Sunday, April 3. This very popular rite of spring has attracted over 1,200 runners and walkers over the past few years and has been named one of the top 75 road races in New England by the prestigious New England Runner magazine. With the added sponsorship these last few years of Marathon Sports, Saucony and Whole Foods, the event has raised approximately $20,000 in corporate donations and entry fees. Proceeds after expenses benefit the Friends of Cambridge Athletics (FOCA), the Andrea Harvey Memorial Fund and the Cambridge Program: Helping Turn Disabilities into Capabilities.
FOCA, in its 12th of existence at CRLS (Cambridge Rindge & Latin School), is a volunteer, non-profit parent organization whose goal is to improve the character and discipline of young teens through sports activities. The organization has supported and introduced new sports such as Crew, Gymnastics, Girls Hockey, Wrestling and Lacrosse.
The Andrea Harvey Memorial Fund is dedicated to a former Cambridge resident and teacher at East Boston High School who was a tragic victim of domestic abuse. The funds raised from the CityRun and CityWalk help provide college scholarships to students from CRLS.
The Cambridge Program, under the city’s Department of Human Services Programs, is designed to enhance the lives of its clients by providing quality programs that promote self-esteem, encourage social interaction and increase physical well being. The program’s goal is to help create for individuals with a range of needs an empathetic community through care, respect and understanding of differences.
So please join April 3 to run, walk or volunteer in the Recreation Department’s annual welcome to spring, sun and warmer temperatures. For more information or an application, visit www.marathonsports.com. To volunteer, please contact Paul Ryder at 617-349-6229 or by e-mail: pryder@cambridgema.gov.
