Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian today announced the members comprising his Transition Team.
The Transition Team is a group of professionals and experts in law enforcement, corrections, human resources, re-entry, judiciary and victims’ rights. Transition Team members will not be paid.
The Transition Team will perform a top to bottom review of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office books, personnel, policy and procedure, current programming and anything else they deem appropriate. They plan to complete their review and propose their recommendations in 90 days.

Amongst Bills earning broad based support by last Friday's cosponsoring deadline is new legislation targeting criminal sex offenders. The new “Three Strikes” legislation requires life-sentences for criminals convicted of any three sex offenses ranging from lewd and lascivious acts up to forcible rape of a child. Sex-offenders convicted under this statute would also be ineligible for a reduction in sentence or parole. Protect Mass Children has spearheaded this effort.

The Cambridge Police Department is proud to report, that for only the fourth time in the last 50 years, there were no murders in Cambridge in 2010. Prior years without a homicide being committed in Cambridge were 1985, 2004, and 2007.
For the 30-year period between 1960 and 1989, the City of Cambridge averaged slightly less than five murders per year. Since 1990, the average annual murder rate for Cambridge has fallen to approximately two per year. Nationally, cities with comparable populations of 100,000 residents average a much higher rate of 10 murders each year.

U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Howard K. Koh, on Monday, Feb. 7, will join Cambridge Major David Maher and other local officials at the Haggerty School to celebrate the one-year anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama’s launch of the Let’s Move! campaign. The campaign’s goal is to end childhood obesity within a generation.

Cambridge City Manager Robert W. Healy is seeking persons interested in serving on the Cambridge Commission for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) advisory board. Made up of 11 Members who serve three-year terms in a volunteer capacity, the CCPD board meets on the second Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. CCPD seeks to build a membership that reflects the cultural and racial diversity of the city, is cross-disability in nature and representative of the different geographical areas of the community. Members must be current residents of Cambridge.
