Household Hazardous Waste collection day on Saturday, October 2

The City of Cambridge is sponsoring a Household Hazardous Waste collection day on Saturday, October 2, from 9 am-1 pm at the Cambridge National Guard Armory, 450 Concord Ave (next to the Sozio Rotary).   This event is free, and open to all Cambridge residents (proof of residency required).

H.E. Valdis Zatlers, President of Latvia is scheduled to visit Harvard University in Cambridge today, late  afternoon.

President Zatlers is in town for a public address to discuss the related project: The Future of Diplomacy Project. "Lavia and Europe After Economic crisis: What's Next."

DEA Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

The Cambridge Police Department, in collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, will be holding a prescription drug take-back day on Saturday, September 25th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Personnel will be available at the Cambridge Police Department, located in the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility at 125 Sixth Street in Cambridge, to accept your unused or unwanted prescription drugs.

Nissenbaum's turns 100 years old

Nissenbaum's Auto Recyclers  located on Columbia Street  is throwing a birthday party to celebrate it's 100th year anniversary as a family owned business .
The owners of the used autopart giant has taken out permits to close down Columbia Street on Sunday October 3rd from 1-5 p.m.  to celebrate the occasion with friends and patron with an old fashion block party.

2010-2011 Cambridge Life Magazine & Resource Guide Now Available

The City of Cambridge recently published the 2010-11 edition of The Cambridge Life magazine and city resource guide.  This free publication includes articles on city programs and initiatives, a helpful City resources section with useful numbers listing and newcomers’ guide, public transportation information, etc.

CRLS "Class of 78" reunion a success

The Cambridge Rindge & Latin (CRLS) "Class of 78" Reunion  held last Friday evening and was a complete success.

Reunion organizer Maura McCaffrey-Lewis got in touch with close to one hundred "Class of 78 graduates" of CHLS through Facebook. They  celebrated throughout  the night reminiscing  their happy high-school days of the 70's and even passing around  year books to gather more autographs that were missed thirty-two years ago. The event packed the outdoor patio as well as the function room of the reunion that was held at Paddy's Pub  on Walden Street in North Cambridge.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair vists Cambridge and Somerville today

Under tight security, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is scheduled to visit Harvard Square Wednesday to promote his new book "A Journey."

The former prime minister is back in the media spotlight as "A Journey" hits shelves. Blair was scheduled to visit First Parish church in Harvard Square late Wednesday afternoon. According to sources, Blair may also be planning a last minute visit to Somerville's Davis Square area to promote his book.

Danehy Park Family Day Saturday, Sept. 25

 
The City of Cambridge will host the 15th Annual Danehy Park Family Day on Saturday, September 25, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Enjoy a fun-filled day of children's amusement rides, arts and crafts, music and roving performers, plus free hot dogs, chips, sodas, and T-shirts while supplies last! Check out performances throughout the day at the children's stage.  Other special giveaways include colorful kites that appeal to kids of all ages! The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 26.

DiDomenico keeps seat, Grossman wins

Sal DiDomenico won the rematch.
In a second meeting in five months, DiDomeico defeated Cambridge lawyer Tim Flaherty in a race for a state senate seat that covers two precincts in wards one and two in Somerville. DiDomenico beat Flaherty in a democratic primary yesterday after beating him by 125 votes in April to succeed Anthony Galluccio, who resigned his seat from jail after a probation violation.

Third Man Pleads Guilty In Connection With 2006 Cambridge Homicide

A Boston man has pled guilty in connection with the 2006 shooting death of Corey Davis, 19, in Cambridge, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today.
 
Sherrod Bright, 26, pled guilty today to charges of manslaughter and accessory before the fact.  Middlesex Superior Court Judge Hamlin sentenced Bright to 10 years in State Prison, followed by 10 years probation.

City Offices Closed on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6. Rubbish/ Recycling Pick-Up will be One Day Behind Schedule.

In observance of the Labor Day Holiday on Monday, September 6, there will be no rubbish/ recycling pickup or street cleaning in Cambridge.  Rubbish/ recycling daily pickup routes will be one day behind schedule for the remainder of that week.  The odd side B district will be posted and swept on Tuesday, August 31.

Participate in the 2010 City of Cambridge Citizen Survey Sept. 9-30

In continuing efforts to identify ways to better serve the community, the City of Cambridge is conducting a Citizen Survey from Sept. 9-30, 2010.  The survey serves as an important evaluation tool that enables residents to rate city services and offer input on what we do well and where we can make improvements.

The East Cambridge Business Association (ECBA) is proud to present The East Cambridge Business Association “Smoke This” Rib Fest 2010, on Sunday October 17, 2010 from 12:00 noon – 4:00pm. The Rib Fest and Street Food Fair will take place on Cambridge Street (between Fulkerson Street and Sixth Street). The Rib Fest will be a culinary showdown pitting pit master against pit master for the title of the best ribs in town.
