At approximately 9:05AM on Monday, May 3rd, Cambridge officers responded to a woman giving birth at the Valvoline Instant Oil Change located at 2485 Mass Ave. Officer Steve Allen arrived within minutes to find a frantic crowd waving him over to an SUV parked in the parking lot. Officer Allen jumped from his cruiser and ran to the SUV to find the woman had given birth in the back seat just as he arrived on scene. A woman assisting the mother in the back seat immediately thrust the baby into Officer Allen’s hands informing him that the baby was not breathing. Officer Allen immediately assessed that the baby was not breathing and was turning blue. Using his first aid training, Officer Allen turned the baby over in his hands and delivered two back blows to the baby, checked the baby’s mouth for blockage and was about to deliver breaths into the baby’s mouth when the baby started breathing and crying. Officer Allen held on to the screaming baby until Pro Ambulance arrived a short time later. Both mother and baby were transported to Mt Auburn Hospital where both were reportedly doing fine.
